The porous media model has been successfully applied to numerical simulation of current and wave interaction with traditional permeable coastal structures such as breakwaters. Recently this model was employed to simulate flow through and around fishing net structures, where the unknown porous resistance coefficients were adjusted by fitting the available experimental data. In the present paper, a new approach was proposed to calculate the porous resistance coefficients based on the transformation of Morison type load model. The transformation follows the principle that the total forces acting on a net panel from Morison type load model should be equal to the forces obtained from the porous media model. In order to account for the interaction effects in-between the twines, two coefficients were introduced, and they were calibrated by minimizing the least square error function. Extensive validation cases were carried out to examine the performance of the numerical model. This includes steady current flow through plane net panels and circular fish cages, and wave interaction with plane net panels. A variety of fishing nets with different solidity ratios were used in the validation cases, from which it was seen that the overall agreement between the numerical and experimental results is fair.

A series of physical model experiments was performed to investigate the hydrodynamic responses of a semi-submersible offshore fish farm in waves. The structural configuration of the fish farm primarily refers to that of the world's first offshore fish farm, Ocean Farm 1, developed by SalMar in Norway. The mooring line tension and motion response of the fish farm were measured at three draughts. The study indicated that the tension on the windward mooring line is greater than that on the leeward mooring line. As the wave height increases, the mooring line tension and motion responses including the heave, surge, and pitch exhibit an upward trend. The windward mooring line tension decreased slightly with increasing draught. The existence of net resulted in approximately 42% reduction in mooring line tension and approximately 51% reduction in surge motion. However, the heave and pitch of the fish farm increased slightly with the existence of net. It was found that the wave parameters, draught, and net have noticeable effect on the hydrodynamic response. Thus, these factors are suggested to be considered in structural designs and optimization to guarantee the ability of the fish farm to resist destruction and ensure safety of workers during intense waves. weakness of development. The floaters and columns for a fish farm could be ideally used as a wave energy converter platform. The aquaculture platform of sufficient dimensions can support several wind turbines and realize self-power supply of the offshore fish farm. Overall, both the converter platform of wave energy and offshore wind turbine can be combined with this kind of new type of offshore aquaculture facility. Due to its superior performance, the offshore fish farm considered is accepted and widely used all over the world. Hence, fundamental research on the offshore fish farm is very critical, especially in the initial stage.

Trawl nets are mostly flexible structures working in the water. In order to investigate the effect of the fluid-structure interaction on the trawl net's numerical model, we modeled the trawl net and the flow field based on lumped mass method and finite volume method, separately; then we adopted a hybrid volume method (HVM) to model the fluid-structure interaction between the net and surrounding water. Since the gridding of trawl net is independent of its shape within the proposed HVM, large mesh can be used for the calculation of fluid-structure coupling model for higher efficiency. First, existing flume tank experimental data were used to verify the accuracy of the HVM. Then, trawl net states were analyzed based on the HVM by taking the fluid-structure coupling into consideration. The simulation reveals that difference between the trawl net model with and without fluid-structure interaction is about 6%, the main reason for that is the relative velocity of water flow around the codend is only 1/5 of the towing speed because of the flow blocking by the trawl mesh upstream. The above results indicate that fluid-structure interaction is very important for the analysis of trawl net which should not be ignored when numerical modelling.
