Experimental Investigation of Particle Size Effect on Agglomeration Behaviors in Gas–Solid Fluidized Beds

Abstract: A novel induction heating apparatus is designed to mimic the exothermic process in an olefin polymerization gas–solid fluidized bed. Wax/graphite composites with core–shell structure are used as tracer particles to capture the agglomerates formed in the cold mode experiments. Pressure fluctuation sensors and image analysis methodology are used to characterize the detailed information on agglomerates such as mass, size, and compositions. Experimental results reveal that when the mass fraction of tracer particle… Show more

“…Porosity of particles can enhance their aerosol performance (45). F4 and F5 were small and spherical with apparently smooth surfaces and evidence of particle agglomeration (Figure 1d, e), possibly due to high surface energy of the particles, which commonly increases cohesiveness and compromises flowability (46)(47)(48).…”

“…control the local air velocity for a circulated fluidized bed (CFB). For a gas-solid fluidized bed (FB), Wang et al [9] found that small particles caused agglomerates more easily than common particles and the collisions among small-small particles or small-common particles were very regular and effective than that of common-common particles. Johari and Taib [10] found that fluidization quality was affected by the mean sand size being used and by the column size but it was not affected by the shape of the column being used.…”
