Experimental investigation of a solar cooker based on parabolic dish collector with phase change thermal storage unit in Indian climatic conditions

Abstract: Solar cooker based on parabolic dish collector with phase change thermal storage unit was investigated. In this experimental setup, solar cooker with phase change thermal storage unit was kept on absorber plate of parabolic dish collector. During day time, acetanilide (phase change material) stores solar heat and during evening, solar cooker is kept in the insulator box. Then, the phase change material delivers heat to the food. To enhance the performance of solar cooker, three cases have been considered: ordi… Show more

“…The system achieved high temperatures up to 130°C without tracking when erythritol was used as a PCM, which was sufficient to cook food during late evening. Chaudhary et al [4] investigated a solar cooker based on parabolic dish collector with phase change material. It was observed that solar cooker with phase change material having outer surface painted black along with glazing stores 32.3% more heat as compared to PCM in ordinary solar cooker.…”

“…Generally, to achieve high-temperature ranges, concentrating type of collectors is used. The parabolic dish-type concentrators have high collector efficiency so it is widely used in the area of solar cooking (Foong et al 2011;Choudhary et al 2013;Lecuona et al 2013;Farooqui 2013;Umanand and Prasanna 2011;Velraj et al 2012;Mussard and Nydal 2013). Foong et al (2011) studied a small-scale double-reflector solar concentrating system with high-temperature heat storage medium (NaNO 3 and KNO 3 ), and a finite element model was used to numerically analyze the latent heat storage unit.…”
