Experimental Determination of the Low-Energy Spectral Component of Cobalt-60 Sources

Abstract: The relative magnitude of the low-energy spectral component of various representative Cobalt-60 irradiators is measured with a gold and an aluminum walled ionization chamber. It is shown that this measurement permits the calculation of an upper limit on interface do se enhancement.

“…Extensive dosimetry was performed using CaF 2:Mn thermoluminescent dosimeters to map dose rate versus distance for each of the source elements in each of the cells. All irradiations were performed inside Pb-Al shields to reduce dose enhancement effects arising from scattering inside the Co-60 and Cs-137 cells [7,8]. Experiments performed at equivalent dose rates in the Cs and Co cells showed part response was identical to within the ± 10% uncertainty in the dosimetry.…”

“…cm fiO-60 and f x-ray are the fractional hole n yields in the 60Co and 1O-keV x-ray cm sources, and Ri8-6O and R6-ray are the n dose enhancement in the 60Co and 10-keV xray sources. Rie-60 is usually assumed to be 1; however some 60Co sources can have an appreciable low-energy component [16].…”

“…At the present time Monte Carlo calculations of dose ehancement versus photon energy are only available for gold next to silicon and gold next to polyethylene. This restricts the application of the method outlined in [3] to those material combinations. The direct measurement technique does not require data from calculations and can be applied to any combination of materials which are electrically conducting.…”
