Experimental determination of the fatigue life of modified threaded pipe couplings

Abstract: To assemble tubular structures such as pipelines, risers,… , threaded couplings can be used. In service these couplings are often subjected to dynamic loads, and to maintain a secure connection, they are generally preloaded. The combination of preload and external dynamic loads results in a multiaxial stress distribution over the connection, where the coupling's threads act as stress raisers, initiating fatigue cracks. In this study the fatigue life of the standard API Line Pipe coupling and two modified coupl… Show more

“…Stresses that arise in unevenly loaded details of complex shape are often localized in small internal volumes and it is only experimentally possible to effectively determine their effect on strength and fatigue resistance. Such works were carried out for local sections of notched samples of material [7], individual structure units [8,9] and vehicles [10,11] and even for multi-storey buildings [12] on special stands. Making stands and performing experiments are requires considerable expenditure of resources and time, therefore, in modern conditions, the analysis of strength and fatigue resistance is carried out numerically more often.…”

“…Field failures of casing and tubing are most often related to connections, rather than to pipe body. The most common problems with casing connections are casing wear during drilling due to drillstring contact, connection back-out due to heavy drillstring-casing interaction, connection fatigue due to inadequate support and drillstring-casing interaction [37], leaks due to improper make-up, connection jump-out due to inadequate make-up or cross-threading, connection galling due to excessive make-up [28]. In the experience of PETROBRAS, connection seal ovalization due to bending during assembly is a commonly observed problem.…”
