Interest in phase change materials keeps on rising as thermal energy storage grows in popularity in the scientific community as a promising complement for renewable energies in the future. Extending the possibilities beyond pure compounds, the use of mixtures (especially eutectics) widens the range of suitable phase change materials (PCM) available in the market. However, a precise knowledge of the mixtures’ phase behavior is required, making phase diagrams the most appropriate tools to follow. The aim of this work is to collect and analyze published literature concerning the phase diagrams of fatty acid esters mixtures, which constitute promising candidates as PCM due to their attractive properties, such as high latent heat, chemical stability and the possibility of extracting them from vegetable and animal oils. The topic appears as a still open scientific field, where further studies need to be performed to complete, complement and perfect the currently available information.

a b s t r a c tThe solideliquid equilibrium diagrams of binary and ternary mixtures formed by dodecylcyclohexane and the fatty acid esters ethyl laurate and ethyl palmitate was determined herein. The liquidus and solidus lines were obtained through differential scanning calorimetry. The thermograms of pure compounds were resolved into the corresponding overlapping peak components by a fitting analysis, allowing a better estimation of phase-change properties of polymorphs. All binary systems show immiscibility in the solid phase, although those containing dodecylcyclohexane present small regions of partial miscibility. The system formed by ethyl palmitate and dodecylcyclohexane presents a peritectic transition, which was also observed in the ternary system. The thermodynamic modeling was conducted using different models for liquid-phase non-ideality and considering different polymorphs in solid phase. The modeling shows that a probable inversion of polymorphs relative stability occurs for the binary system formed by ethyl laurate and dodecylcyclohexane. The results from this work may contribute to enhancing the understanding and description of the complex behavior of biodiesel/diesel mixtures at low temperatures.

Abstract. The nitrocellulose based materials are degraded in a natural way during their storage; the processes of degradation are accelerated when the temperature or the humidity increases. To prevent this decomposition, these materials include in their composition stabilising agents which retain the nitro groups and avoid the autocatalytic degradation of nitrocellulose. The aim of the present work is to improve our understanding of the basic mechanisms of the degradation of the nitrocellulose based materials and the way in which their stabilization evolves. Solid-liquid phase equilibrium for the binary system of (N-(2-acetoxyethyl)-p-nitroaniline (1) + Nethyle-4-nitrooaniline (2)) is determined using DSC technique. The experimental results were correlated using Wilson and UNIQUAC models. As results, the system studied presents a simple eutectic, where the components are not miscible in the solid phase. Important deviations between experimental and predicted values are observed in the case of ideal model. These deviations can be attributed to the complexity of our system and principally to the presence of intermolecular effects. The best description of SLE was given by the two parameters UNIQUAC.
