Experimental and numerical investigation of the flow field in a high-pressure centrifugal compressor impeller near surge

Abstract: Numerical and experimental investigations were conducted in a transonic centrifugal compressor stage composed of a backswept splittered unshrouded impeller and a vaned diffuser. The present article focuses on the results obtained within the impeller, at an operating condition close to the surge of the compressor. The experimental results were obtained from a laser Doppler anemometry investigation. Unsteady numerical simulations of the compressor stage were performed using a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged … Show more

“…2 shows a meridional view of the compressor stage and the section B where LDA measurements are shown. Information concerning the LDA measurement technique is given in a previous paper (Bulot et al [12]). The uncertainty of the geometric location of any LDA measurement point is estimated to be ±0.15 mm.…”

“…This study is a part of a larger work which aims at understanding the flow phenomena responsible for surge inception. In a previous paper, the impeller internal flow was described with a steady point of view [6]. In this article, the flow evolution from choke to surge is given in the entire compressor from unsteady data obtained at various stable operating conditions.…”
