Experimental and modeling studies on styrene–butyl methacrylate copolymerization reaction

Abstract: SYNOPSISRadical-induced copolymerization of styrene and butyl methacrylate was studied. The effects of the initiator (benzoyl peroxide) concentration, reaction temperature, and poly (vinyl alcohol) amount on the rate of reaction and final product quality are also measured. Kinetics studies and optical microscopy of the reaction mixture indicate that the reaction exhibits autoacceleration behavior, which could be suppressed by reducing the reaction temperature. 'H-NMR of the intermediate and final product sampl… Show more

“…Optical microscopy of liquid samples taken just before and after the foaming shows a sudden change in the characteristics. The former sample shows the presence of a large number of liquid droplets, and the latter the absence of them and the appearance of solid fine polymer particles . This observation from the liquid side once again confirms the sudden rise in polymerization rate at about 90 min in this reactor.…”

“…The conversion X M at the onset of autoacceleration increases with increasing polymerization temperature, in accordance with published data. 20,27 Kinetic model It is necessary to find a kinetic model that fits the conversion vs time curves, and shows the same derivatives (dX/dt) and (d 2 X/dt 2 ) as the experimental results (Figure 3).…”

“…Leakage flows cause interaction between the chambers. The real volumetric throughput is therefore given by: (2) Since these kinds of extruders are fed starved, a partially filled zone arises apart from a fully filled zone before the die. The length of the fully filled zone is mainly determined by the pressure needed to overcome the die resistance and the geometry of the screws (9).…”
