As one of the most important social problems in the world, poverty has been studied by various disciplines. Although poverty is a basic subject of economics, it has also become one of the prominent research fields of social sciences in recent years. Poverty also relates to many psychological processes and mechanisms just as in the other social problems in the world. It is assumed that the social-psychological approach to poverty may contribute to establishing different road maps in combating poverty. Therefore this study aims at contributing to poverty reduction efforts from the social-psychological point of view by providing an integrative review of the social psychological correlates of poverty based on the empirical findings. Also, by including arguments such as social identity, migration, ideology and social context in poverty studies to be conducted with a social psychological perspective, a contribution can be made to poverty reduction with multidimensional research methods.

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) refers to the complex psychological and psychosocial sequelae caused by prolonged interpersonal abuse. Contemporary approaches to CPTSD are dominated by individualized psychological interventions that are long term and costly. However, accumulating evidence indicates that CPTSD is a high prevalence mental illness implicated in significant social problems, with a pattern of lateral and intergenerational transmission that impacts on already disadvantaged communities. Consequently, there have been calls for a public health model for the prevention of CPSTD; however, there has been a lack of clarity as to what this should entail. This article argues that empirical and conceptual shifts framing CPTSD as a shame disorder offers new preventative opportunities. The article presents a series of interconnected literature reviews including a review of available prevalence data on CPTSD, the public health implications of CPTSD, the role of shame and humiliation in CPTSD, and current scholarship on dignity in public policy and professional practice. Drawing on these reviews, this article develops a social ecological model of primary prevention to CPTSD with a focus on the reduction of shame and the promotion of dignity at the relational, community, institutional, and macrolevel. A broad overview of this model is provided with examples of preventative programs and interventions. While the epidemiology of CPTSD is still emerging, this article argues that this model provides the conceptual foundations necessary for the coordination of preventative interventions necessary to reduce to the risk and prevalence of CPSTD.

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a vergonha e a humilhação como consequências da estigmatização da pobreza em indivíduos residentes de uma capital no Sul e no Nordeste do Brasil. Este estudo de natureza qualitativa realizou dez Entrevistas Episódicas com pessoas em situações de pobreza nas duas cidades mencionadas que vivenciaram sentimento de vergonha por conta sua condição financeira. Estes indivíduos participaram de um estudo quantitativo prévio em suas comunidades. Foi realizada análise de conteúdo. Identifica-se que as práticas de humilhação são causadas por tratamentos desiguais. A vergonha pode estar vinculada à exposição e a uma ética moral como constituinte do desenvolvimento humano. No entanto, ela também pode se vincular a um juízo depreciativo relacionado à estigmatização da pobreza. Observou-se que as práticas de humilhação podem desencadear sentimentos de vergonha. Como consequências, as pessoas entrevistadas podem isolar-se, como se adaptarem a essas situações de vergonha e humilhação. Igualmente, percebeu-se que o próprio sentimento de vergonha pode ser um fator de indignação que fornece a possibilidade de resistir e se indignar.
