Execution-driven tools for parallel simulation of parallel architectures and applications

Abstract: EPG-sim is a newly-developed set of tools that performs execution-driven critical path simulation, trace generation, and simulation for serial, optimistically parallelized, and parallel application codes. These capabilities are integrated within a single framework through the use of intelligent source-level instrumentation. The ability to perform execution-driven simulations driven by optimistically paralielized codes, the ability to execute these simulations on parallel hosts, the use of source-level instrumen… Show more

“…After the compiler marking, we instrument the benchmarks to generate events that reflect the behavior of the codes executing on different target architectures. Execution-driven simulations [29] are used to verify the compiler algorithm and to evaluate the performance of compiler-directed coherence schemes. Fig.…”

“…Experimental results are acquired through execution-driven simulations of large, optimized, parallel numerical benchmarks by using EPG-sim [9], a system of execution-driven tools for studying parallel architectures, compiler algorithms, and applications. Simulations model a shared memory architecture with directory-based cache coherence and are driven by parallel versions of Perfect Benchmarks [10] codes that have been optimized for the modeled architecture.…”
