Introduction: The prevalence of violence in intimate relationships, suffered or perpetrated, was estimated among undergraduate students, be it physical, psychological and sexual, describing the overlap between them. This is an original study and there is scarce literature on this matter in Brazil. Men and women were investigated and some issues on gender violence were discussed. Methods: The study is part of the multicenter survey "International Study of Violence in Dating -IDVS" conducted in 2002 -2003, using its standardized instrument. A total of 362 students, from two universities in the state of São Paulo, one public and one private, answered the self-reported questionnaire, being 37% male and 63% female, mean age of 20 years old. Suffered and perpetrated intimate partner violence during life was examined. Results: Among all interviewees, 75.9% suffered and 76.4% perpetrated some kind of violence throughout life. Psychological violence was the most prevalent type, followed by sexual violence, both suffered and perpetrated. The great superposition between suffered and perpetrated violence (83.9%) reflects the reciprocity of aggression, with no observed difference between men and women. The results of this study are consistent with previous literature on dating violence, which shows high prevalence of suffered and perpetrated violence, besides reciprocity for both men and women. Conclusions: Intervention actions at this stage of intimate relationships may potentially impact on subsequent marital partnership situations. Keywords

A pesar de que la violencia en el noviazgo se inicia con frecuencia durante la adolescencia y que se ha postulado como un factor de riesgo para formas graves de violencia en las parejas adultas, el corpus de investigación sobre esta problemática continúa siendo limitado. En este trabajo se investiga la direccionalidad y expresión conductual de las agresiones (psicológicas y físicas) cometidas y sufridas en las relaciones de noviazgo en una muestra (N = 69) de estudiantes con edades comprendidas entre los 16 y los 27 años. Los resultados hallados mostraron un patrón recíproco muy frecuente en la agresión psicológica pero, a medida que se agrava la expresión conductual de la violencia (e.g., golpes, amenazas o palizas), disminuye su carácter recíproco y se incrementa la unidireccionalidad de las agresiones. La variable género no predijo la direccionalidad de la violencia y no ejerció un efecto significativo sobre las variables de estudio, agresión cometida (perpetración) y agresión sufrida (victimización). Además, la violencia psicológica/verbal fue la modalidad agresiva más empleada por los agresores y más sufrida por las víctimas. El trabajo presenta implicaciones prácticas que pueden contribuir a hacer visible esta problemática y a concienciar y sensibilizar a los poderes públicos para el desarrollo de medidas de prevención de la violencia y de intervención con las víctimas.Palabras clave: violencia; relaciones de noviazgo; abuso en las relaciones; agresión psicológica; agresión física. ResumoA violência doméstica contra mulheres afecta negativamente o desenvolvimento de alguns domínios de auto-regulação. Contudo, pouco se conhece sobre o seu impacto na auto-regulação da aprendizagem. Este estudo avaliou a auto-regulação da aprendizagem em 50 filhos de vítimas de violência doméstica contra mulheres. O grupo de filhos de vítimas apresentou níveis inferiores de rendimento académico. O grupo de filhos de vítimas simultaneamente de violência psicológica e física registou níveis inferiores nas dimensões de Avaliação e Execução de auto-regulação da aprendizagem. Estes resultados suportam as evidências de que a exposição à violência doméstica afecta negativamente o desenvolvimento da auto-regulação. Para além disso, sugerem que a exposição a violência familiar afecta negativamente também algumas dimensões da auto-regulação da aprendizagem. However, very little is known about its impact on self-regulated learning. This study evaluated self-regulation of learning in children and adolescents exposed to domestic violence. Fifty children and adolescents, whose mothers were victims of domestic violence and 50 whose mothers were not, participated in the study. The group of children and adolescents whose mothers were victims of intimate partner violence registered lower academic performance and the group exposed simultaneously to psychological and physical violence registered lower scores on the self-regulation dimensions of evaluation and execution. The results support the evidence that exposure to domestic violence has a negative impact on self-regulation. Also, they suggest that exposure to domestic violence has a negative impact in some dimensions of self-regulated learning.
