Examining Mediators of the Link Between Generativity and Well-being

Abstract: Generativity involves raising and guiding the next generation, contributing to society, and creating new products and ideas. It has clearly been related to personal well-being, yet little is known about why this relationship exists. According to McAdams and de St. Aubin (J Pers Soc Psychol, 62:1003-1015, 1992, generativity is motivated by a desire for symbolic immortality, a need to be needed, and society's expectation that one should be a contributing member. It was therefore hypothesized that the satisfacti… Show more

“…Of course, the suggestion that eudaimonia is sensitive to environmental circumstances implies that parents need to invest effort if they want their children to purse excellence-effort to be high on both demandingness and responsiveness, and effort to be genuinely eudaimonic themselves. Happily, eudaimonia and generative contributions bring personal well-being as by-products, so that the parents are enriched as well (Huta and Zuroff 2007).…”

“…However, generativity not only includes contributing to others, but also implies some individual benefits. Thus, there are many studies linking high generativity concerns in adulthood to life satisfaction (McAdams, de St. Aubin, & Logan, 1993; Stewart, Ostrove, & Helson, 2001) and wellbeing (Huta & Zuroff, 2007; Villar, López, & Celdrán, 2013). Vaillant (1993) even reported some longitudinal evidence for this link, supporting the idea that being generative in adulthood may promote successful coping with later life challenges.…”

“…Generativity, both qualitatively described and measured in quantitative surveys, is highly correlated with subjective well-being and self-reported experiences of successful aging 19, 21-24 . Fewer studies have explored the link with physical outcomes, with the exception of Gruenewald and colleagues who found in the MIDUS study that generativity independently predicted lower risk of activities of daily living limitations (ADL) and mortality over a 10-year period 25 .…”
