Abstract. The purpose of the present study is to describe the roles and responsibilities of academic leaders.Specifically it aimed to provide answers to following questions: What are the competencies of academic leadership? What are the approaches determined by academic leaders in the management of organizational process? A phenomenological research design of qualitative research was used. The participants of the study consist of 13 senior managers from various positions in a university in Turkey and they were determined through maximum variation sampling method. In collection of the data, a semi-structured interview model was used. According to the results of the study, the managers participating in the study categorize the tasks on the focus of academic leadership role into three groups, "bureaucratic works", "the works about instructors" and "educational works". When the views of the managers about the factors shaping the academic leadership role were studied, scientific and techonological advances, socio-cultural background and personal factors played important role in the process.

This study aims to identify the level of academic leadership competencies in selected Saudi higher education institutions (SSHEIs). It also seeks to investigate gender differences in academic leadership competencies (ALC) in SSHEIs. This study employed quantitative method to collect the data. The researchers used a questionnaire consisting of 29 items. The questionnaire was randomly distributed among faculty members in the SSHEIs in Jazan Province. There were 550 questionnaires distributed, 496 of them were received for analysis using SPSS (V.23). The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and an independent sample T-test. The findings indicated that academic leaders had a very high level of leadership competencies (LC) which reflect on the very high level of personal skills (PS) and high level of required skills (RS) of academic leaders. The findings also revealed that there is a significant gender difference in the mean score regarding the ALC in higher education. The findings implied that male academic leaders had more LC compared to female academic leaders. The current results are valuable for higher education in terms of providing evidence of the level of LC and gender differences of leadership competencies in the SSHEIs. Accordingly, the findings will contribute to the body of knowledge regarding leadership in higher education. The findings also will be beneficial for policymakers, academics leaders, and the officials of higher education. The theoretical and practical implications of the study as well as recommendations were also discussed.

This study aims to investigate the instructional leadership practices in universities by analyzing the views of department heads. A qualitative method and a case design was used. Data were gathered through a semistructured interview form developed by researchers via face-to-face interviews. The sample consists of 26 department heads from six different faculties of a university in Karadeniz region of Turkey. Participants were determined through maximum variety sampling technique. Results demonstrate that department heads have spent most of their time for administrative issues. For the professional development of the academicians, they give more importance to social and psychological support studies. It is emphasized that guidance and supervision activities are important for the effective implementation of the curriculum. They work for ensuring the courses are being planned according to constructivist approach. In order to provide students sophisticated development, it is stated that social, cultural and sport activities are usually carried out. In addition, it has been understood that department heads should have positive leadership skills such as being successful in their field, renewing themselves constantly and having effective communication skills in order to be a good instructional leader. Based on the results, it is recommended to decrease workloads and to train department heads about educational administration and instructional leadership to support their leadership roles.
