Evolution of models to support community and policy action with science: Balancing pastoral livelihoods and wildlife conservation in savannas of East Africa

Abstract: We developed a "continual engagement" model to better integrate knowledge from policy makers, communities, and researchers with the goal of promoting more effective action to balance poverty alleviation and wildlife conservation in 4 pastoral ecosystems of East Africa. The model involved the creation of a core boundary-spanning team, including community facilitators, a policy facilitator, and transdisciplinary researchers, responsible for linking with a wide range of actors from local to global scales. “…This covers the classic "demarcation" of science from non-science (S1Uo) as originally described by Gieryn (1983;1999) and generally pursued through strategies of peer review. It also turns out to be the principle challenge faced by efforts seeking to advance understanding by bringing together multiple kinds of knowledge (SnUo), whether through interdisciplinary scientific research (Mollinga 2008) or the integration of indigenous and scientific knowledge (Reid et al 2009). …”

“…"Salience" refers to the relevance of scientific knowledge to the needs of decisionmakers; "credibility" comes from scientific and technical arguments being trustworthy and expert-based; and "legitimacy" refers to knowledge that is produced in an unbiased way and that fairly considers stakeholders' different points of view. Their framework has inspired researchers to investigate these three attributes and how they affect decision-makers using knowledge (17)(18)(19)(20)(21).…”
