“…These authors claim that an unidentified productive sector in the Brazilian hinterland is increasing wages in smaller and medium-sized municipalities. Although the authors did not identify such sector, this could be due to the non-agricultural jobs of the "new rural" sector of the country as proposed by Laurenti et al [43]. In this respect, at least in Mato Grosso, the local supply chain and the presence of processing facilities allows the state to generate off-farm wealth, although the ultimate source of this wealth is in the soy expansion [7].…”

“…Consequently, if non-agricultural jobs were not enough to absorb workers, this would lead to further income inequality. Although Laurenti et al [43] agreed that export-oriented agriculture generated less jobs, these authors argue that non-agricultural jobs are increasing in rural areas of Brazil, decreasing the income gap between rural and urban workers, and rural income inequality. Lustig et al [42] also note a decreasing difference between urban and rural wages.…”

“…A prática de adubação também poderia trazer resultados positivos na produtividade da erva-mate (Santinet al, 2015). Entretanto, essas atividades podem não ser prioridade em uma propriedade rural com disponibilidade de mão de obra cada vez mais escassa (Laurenti, 2013), de forma que as áreas de vegetação nativa ficam em segundo plano na geração de trabalho e renda.…”

“…Between 1970 and 2010, the rural population in Brazil fell from 44.0% to 15.6% of the total population, revealing the speed of urbanization in the country; nonetheless, in absolute terms, the size of the Brazilian rural population continues to be significant, amounting to over 30 million people in 2010 (MAIA; BUAINAIN, 2015). Starting in the 2000s, studies began investigating the population dynamics related to people employed in the rural environment in Brazil (NEDER, 2008;BALSADI, 2009;DEDECCA, 2010;PRONI, 2010;MAIA, 2012;STADUTO et al, 2013;MATTEI, 2015;LAURENTI et al, 2015;DEL GROSSI, 2016). In general, the results indicated a reduction in the rural economically active population (EAP) engaged in agricultural activity and an increase in the rural EAP engaged in non-agricultural activity.…”
