Evaluation of Urine Cytology in Urothelial Carcinoma Patients: A Comparison of CellprepPlus® Liquid-Based Cytology and Conventional Smear

Abstract: BackgroundUrine cytology is an important test in the screening of urothlelial neoplasms. The conventional smear (CS) method of testing urine samples has a low sensitivity, approximately 50% result accuracy for detecting urothelial carcinomas, while liquid-based cytology (LBC) has much improved diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. The aim of this study was to compare the morphologic features and diagnostic efficacy of CellprepPlus® LBC with those of CS for urine cytology.MethodsA total of 713 case… Show more

“…Consistent with previous studies, we found that CellprepPlus® LBC yielded larger tumor cell nuclei in 20 of the 30 cases and more hypochromatic tumor cell nuclei in 18 of the 30 cases compared to ThinPrep® LBC. Therefore, the nucleoli and nuclear membrane of the tumor cells were more prominent in CellprepPlus® LBC preparations compared to ThinPrep® LBC preparations in 20 of the 30 cases.…”

“…Koo et al reported that preparation of body fluids using CellprepPlus® LBC yielded better sensitivity and negative predictive values, as well as a higher slide quality, than the conventional smear. The use of CellprepPlus® LBC in preparing urine cytology specimens also resulted in improved slide quality and diagnostic accuracy compared to the conventional smear . Additionally, CellPrep® LBC produced results comparable to those of ThinPrep® LBC in terms of smear quality and diagnostic efficacy in cervicovaginal smear, body fluid, and urine specimen preparations…”

“…Once the CP vials were placed into the CellprepPlus® device, the cells they contained were stirred by an air jet from the outside. After collecting the cells on a filter attached to the outside of the CP vial with absorbing wind pressure, they were blown from the filter to the slide using air pressure and transferred to a circular area of 20 mm in a thin layer [18]. Each CP slide was quickly postfixed with 95% ethanol for over 30 min.…”
