Evaluation of traditional medicinal plant, Cissus setosa Roxb. (Vitaceae) for antiulcer property

Abstract: is an indigenous medicinal herb commonly used for the treatment of gastro ulcers. In the current investigation the aerial methanolic extract of was investigated for their antiulcer activity using pylorus ligation and ethanol in experimental rats. The extract was administered at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w. orally for 3 days. However, higher dose of the extract subsequently reduced gastric ulcer induced aberrations by pylorus ligation (70.05%) and ethanol (78.16%) as judged by their altered biochemical p… Show more

“…Pyloric ligation is a surgical model used to determine anti-secretory activity. Ligating the pylorus causes intraluminal HCl accumulation, which aggressively damages the gastric mucosa [75]. In this study, gastric acid output was examined in all groups, but only the animals in the cimetidine group showed a significant reduction of gastric acid secretory rates and total acidity.…”

“…The genus Cissus comprises about 350 plant species distributed all over the world, mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. Some members of the genus are edible and serve as a source of both food and beverages while others are used as medicinal plants of great importance in treating a variety of both human and animal pathogenic infections [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Within Limpopo Province, South Africa, the bulbs are used in the treatment of various infections including cancer, sexually transmitted infections, and opportunistic infections associated with HIV-AIDS, and as a general well-being medicine [ 7 ].…”

“…It is generally accepted that it results from an imbalance between exogenous damaging agents, such as reactive oxygen species, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, Helicobacter pylori and the frequent use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the endogenous protective mechanisms of the stomach (the mucosal barrier, mucus secretion, efflux of bicarbonate, increasing antioxidant levels, cell regeneration, prostaglandins, and nitric oxide among others) [7,8]. Despite the fact that many synthetic drugs are used in the clinic to manage gastric ulcer disease, including proton pump inhibitors, antacids and antihistaminic agents, these treatments are insufficient for complete ulcer healing, thus they are intimately linked to ulcer recurrence [9]. Additionally, the majority of treatments result in several adverse reactions, such as hypersensitivity, arrhythmia, hepatic injury, and Journal of Advanced Scientific Research, 2022; 13 (6): July-2022 hematopoietic changes, which limit their applications [10,11].…”
