Evaluation of the volatile and chiral composition in Pistacia lentiscus L. essential oil

Abstract: In the present research, the chemical composition of the volatiles present in the fresh leaves and twigs of Pistacia lentiscus L. was determined by using GC-FID and GC-MS. In past years the oil was employed in the perfumery, food and pharmaceutical industries, while recently it has been re-evaluated as a ½avouring in alcoholic beverages and chewing gums, due to the natural production of the exudate called 'mastic gum'. The present study was carried out on Sicilian plants with the aim of integrating the already… Show more

“…group regarding the analysis of allergens in perfumes [14], chiral compounds in Pistacia lentiscus L. [23] and mandarin essential oil [22] and for the simultaneous investigation of oxygenated compounds and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes (BTEX) in gasoline [28]. Thirteen heart-cuts were selected from the first non-polar column to be transferred to the polar column (Fig.…”

“…Heart-cut GC has been used after stir bar sorptive extraction for the enantioselective analysis of TTO by Mosandl and co-workers in 2002 [21]. The same multidimensional instrumentation used in this study coupled to mass spectrometry has been recently employed in the essential oils field for enantiomeric ratio assessment by our group [22,23], as well as in the identification and quantification of allergens in flavour and fragrance matrices [24]. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid and accurate multidimensional method for the determination of the compounds reported in ISO/FDIS 4730:2004 for the quality assessment of pure tea tree oil.…”

“…Several isomers of camphorene are found in the essential oils distilled from the leaves and twigs of P. lentiscus [66] and from mastic gum derived from the same plant [67]. Bicyclic and tricyclic diterpenes also occur in essential oils.…”

“…The use in the MDGC systems of a conventional 2-D column allows the generation of the number of theoretical plates necessary for the separation of the ethers and alcohols from the hydrocarbons pre-separated in the first GC dimension. The advantages of the twin-oven MDGC system have been reported in previous studies [21][22][23][24]. The possibility to set different temperature off-sets in the second dimension oven offers improved performances in terms of hot or cold focusing effects, that can be chosen case by case in order to optimize the results.…”
