Evaluation of the Trypanocidal Activity of Lignans Isolated from the Leaves of Zanthoxylum naranjillo

Abstract: Seven lignans isolated from the hexane extract of the leaves of Zanthoxyllum naranjillo (Rutaceae) were tested in both in vitro and in vivo assays against two strains of Trypanosoma cruzi (Bolivia and Y). Of the seven assayed lignans, three were inactive [(+)-sesamin, (+)-piperitol-4'-O-gamma, gamma-dimethylallyl ether and (-)-3,4-dimethoxy-3',4'-demethylenedioxycubebin] and three were partially active in the in vitro assays [(-)-hibalactone, (-)-kaerophylin and (-)-cubebin]. Healthy animals developed the dise… Show more

“…1 Chemically, this genus is characterized by alkaloids, [2][3][4][5][6][7] cumarins, 5,6,8 lignans, 4,9,10 amides 11,12 and terpenes. 5,6,13,14 Ongoing studies have shown that Zanthoxylum exhibit a range of biological activities such as antichagas, 2 tripanocidal, 9 antiplasmodial, 7 anti-HIV 13 and antiinflammatory, 8,10 as well as antihelmintic. 12 Z. riedelianum is used in folk medicine as a decoction against different types of inflammations, rheumatism and skin stains.…”

“…3 De plantas da família Rutaceae foram isolados alcalóides e lignanas com atividades tripanocidas. 4,5 Além disso, as atividades sobre o T. cruzi ou sobre sua enzima GAPDH (gliceraldeído 3-fosfatodesidrogenase) de vários extratos e algumas substâncias isoladas desta mesma família foram determinadas. “…Since compound 17 was inactive, this finding implicated that the crucial structural element for activity of 16 may be due to the pinoresinol moiety rather than the taxifolin unit, consistent with reports on the antiprotozoal activity of lignans. 23,24) Next, we assessed the immunostimulating potential of compounds 1-17. First experiments have focused on the evaluation of 1-17 on the release of nitric oxide (NO), using the Griess assay.…”
