Evaluation of the Production Performance and the Meat Quality of Chickens Reared in Organic System. As Affected by the Inclusion of Calliphora sp. in the Diet

Abstract: The use of insects can be a possible source of protein. This study uses Calliphora sp. larvae (CLM) as a protein source in 320 one-day-old medium-growing male chicks (RedBro) during their first month of life. Chickens were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments. Each group consisted of 10 animals, and a total of 8 replicas. Control group was fed with a certified organic feed. The experimental treatments were supplemented with 5% (T2), 10% (T3), or 15% (T4) of CLM, reducing in each case the corresponding … Show more

“…A thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay was performed as a modified method described by Kilic and Richards [ 24 ] and Sarmiento-Garcia et al [ 25 ] in triplicate from each group to determine lipid peroxidation. A two-gram sample was taken from the yolk and added to 12 mL of the trichloroacetic acid (TCA) solution (7.5% TCA, 0.1% EDTA, 0.1% Propyl gallate).…”

“…Therefore, the use of non-soybean protein sources in poultry diets is essential to avoiding negative social, economic and ecological impacts arising from large-scale soybean imports. Currently, there is an emerging trend towards the use of alternative feeds to soybeans for poultry which are capable of achieving feed efficiency and feed quality equivalent or superior to soyabean feeds [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”

“…Therefore, it is very likely that chickens would do well with insect meal as part of their dietary rations [ 10 ]. Insects are claimed to be an alternative and sustainable nutritional source for farm animals, including poultry [ 8 , 11 , 12 ]. It is a high-protein feed [ 13 ], which also has a considerable amount of unsaturated fats (specifically linoleic and linolenic acids), and large amounts vitamins, fiber and minerals [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…also reported that the enhancement of the mixed gel might be a result of the interaction between fish and chicken proteins at a setting temperature of 45 °C. The abundant phospholipids in chicken often form a phospholipid bilayer with proteins, glycolipids, cholesterol and other molecules 26 . During heating, the hydrophilic group of phospholipids may combine with the hydrophobic groups of proteins resulting in a decrease in gel strength of the mixed gels.…”

Chicken breast contains a large number of myofibrillar protein bundles, and this dense structure resulted in myogenic fibrillar proteins not being easily separated.…”
