We used both correlation and covariance-principal component analysis (PCA) to classify the same absorption-reflectance data collected from 13 different polymeric fabric materials that was obtained using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The application of the two techniques, though similar, yielded results that represent different chemical properties of the polymeric substances. On one hand, correlation-PCA enabled the classification of the fabric materials according to the organic functional groups of their repeating monomer units. On the other hand, covariance-PCA was used to classify the fabric materials primarily according to their origins; natural (animal or plant) or synthetic. Hence besides major chemical functional groups of the repeat units, it appears covariance-PCA is also sensitive to other characteristic chemical (inorganic and/or organic) or biochemical material inclusions that are found in different samples. We therefore recommend the application of both covariance-PCA and correlation-PCA on datasets, whenever applicable, to enable a broader classification of spectroscopic information through data mining and exploration.

Variety and durability of color are presumed as key constrains of natural dyes. So, this study attempts to investigate the effect of metallic mordants on the color fastness properties of ecologically dyed cotton fabric using banana floral stem sap. Color difference was measured in terms of hue (ΔH*), chroma (ΔL*) and value (ΔC*) difference. Metal ions in residual mordanting bath, dyeing wastewater and level of trace metals in the finished fabric surface were accessed to justify the environmental safety and speculate the health risk respectively. Pre-mordanted specimens were dyed at 100 °C for 60 min. Optical properties of extracted sap were observed by UV visible spectroscopy. Dye fixation with fiber was determined by FTIR-ATR spectra. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was employed to determine the trace metals in finished fabric. Effect of metallic mordants were calculated in terms of color fastness to wash, water, perspiration, rubbing and light for estimating the color durability. Except light fastness property almost all color fastness values were 4/5, i.e. very good. Light fastness properties were improved for mordanting action with metallic salts. The level of trace metals in finished fabric were within the safe zone.

U-Zr alloys have potential use in low power or research reactors due to numerous advantages, while U-Pu-Zr alloys are considered a metallic fuel for fast breeder reactors. An analytical methodology was developed for the quantification of trace elements in U-Zr alloys by using inductively coupled plasma orthogonal acceleration time of flight mass spectrometry (ICP-oa-TOF-MS). A dual solvent extraction technique was employed for matrix separation prior to analysis of the trace constituents by ICP-oa-TOF-MS. Zirconium was synergistically extracted by 2-thionyltrifluoro-acetone (HTTA) in the presence of tri-butylphosphine oxide (TBPO) in 1,2-dichloroethane, while uranium was separated by the well-established tributylphosphate (TBP)/carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4) solvent extraction technique.
