Evaluation of the Mechanism of Action of Conjugated Linoleic Acid Isomers on Reproduction in Dairy Cows

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanism of action through which conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) beneficially affects reproduction. Lactating Holstein cows (n = 45, 20 +/- 1 DIM) were assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 70 g/d of Ca salts of tallow (control); 63 g/d of lipid-encapsulated CLA providing 7.1 g/d of cis-9, trans-11 CLA and 2.4 g/d of trans-10, cis-12 CLA (CLA 75:25); or 76 g/d of lipid-encapsulated CLA providing 7.1 g/d each of cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12 CLA (CLA 50:50). “…In several studies in which cows were fed a variety of CLA supplements in early or mid-lactation, no effect on DMI was observed (Piperova et al, 2004;Castañ eda-Gutié rrez et al, 2005;Castañ eda-Gutié rrez et al, 2007;Odens et al, 2007). However, a trend for lower intake was observed in cows fed calcium salts of CLA in early lactation (Selberg et al, 2004) or abomasally infused with CLA supplements (Baumgard et al, 2000).…”

“…2005; Bauman et al. 2008), enhance plasma concentrations of IGF‐1 (Castanheda‐Gutierrez et al. 2007) with a promising shortening of time to conception and increased pregnancy rates when supplemented to diets fed by lactating dairy cows (Bernal‐Santos et al.…”

“…Lately, researchers have been focusing mainly on the isomers cis-9, trans-11 and the trans-10, cis-12. Feeding these isomers in a rumen-protected form to transition dairy cows reduces negative energy balance and NEFA and BHB levels in blood (Mattos et al, 2000;Castaneda-Gutierrez et al, 2007;Trevisi and Bertoni, 2008;Esposito et al, 2013). CLA supplementation increases DMI and some of the negative acute phase proteins such as albumin and cholesterol Esposito et al, 2013).…”
