Evaluation of Tensile Bond Strength between Self-Adhesive Resin Cement and Surface-Pretreated Zirconia

Abstract: The tensile bond strength between zirconia subjected to different surface-pretreatment methods and methacryloyloxydecyl-dihydrogen-phosphate (MDP)-containing self-adhesive resin cement was evaluated herein. Eighty-eight cylindrical zirconia specimens were randomly divided into the following four groups based on the pretreatment method: (1) no treatment, (2) air abrasion, (3) HNO3/HF etching, and (4) zirconia-nanoparticle coating. The tensile bond strength of the zirconia–resin-cement complexes was investigated… Show more

“…It is noteworthy that all the surface treatments could increase bond strengths compared with the control group. These findings are in agreement with other studies 21 , 36 , 37 , indicating that roughness is indispensable for the mechanical bond of resin-zirconia. Unlike the results from this study, a higher bond strength of air abrasion over HF treatment has been reported 21 , 38 .…”

“…Unlike the results from this study, a higher bond strength of air abrasion over HF treatment has been reported 21 , 38 . Additionally, some studies have demonstrated that the use of HF/HNO 3 could increase bond strength to a larger degree than air abrasion 19 , 37 . These inconsistent results could be attributed to the differences in acid concentration, etching time, or resin cement types 19 , 39 , 40 .…”

“…Micromechanical retention and chemical adhesion have been used, aiming to increase the bond strength between different materials [ 5 , 20 ]. In the present study, the application of 10-MDP containing primer and universal dentin adhesive showed to increase the SBS between self-adhesive resin cement and tested materials, corroborating with previous studies [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Several other methods for achieving roughness of the zirconia surface have been recommended [ 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Among them, the acid etching method chemically corrodes the zirconia surface and increases its roughness [ 24 ]. The chemical etching methods have the advantage that it can produce surface roughness without significantly affecting the properties of the zirconia [ 25 , 26 ].…”
