Evaluation of Tenckhoff Catheter Use and Ceftriaxone Intraperitoneal Administration in Horses

Abstract: Peritonitis in horses persists with high incidence and mortality, requiring more innovative and effective therapeutic strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate Tenckhoff catheters and intraperitoneal use of ceftriaxone in horses. Ten healthy, male horses, with an average age of 5 years, were used and divided into two groups of five animals each. A Tenckhoff catheter was implanted in both groups. The intraperitoneal group received 25 mg/kg of ceftriaxone diluted in 1 L of 0.9% saline solution (SS) intra… Show more

“…The use of the Tenckhoff-type catheter for intraperitoneal administration of ceftriaxone in horses was described by Alonso et al 28 Here, intraperitoneal administrations were performed using the metallic guidewire of 14G venous catheters and no complications were observed while performing the procedure. The peritoneal fluid in 26.9 per cent (n=7/26) of the animals included in the study did not allow the evaluation of all inclusion criteria, and a cytological evaluation was prioritised.…”

“…The use of intraperitoneal route for ceftriaxone administration in horses has recently been described by Alonso et al (2017Alonso et al ( , 2018, and prolonged use of metronidazole without occurrence of adverse effects is reported as effective in abdominal abscesses treatment (Sweeney et al, 1991). The aim of this report is to describe a successful medical management of peritonitis and abdominal abscess with an association of intraperitoneal ceftriaxone, systemic gentamicin, and metronidazole.…”
