Facultative predation is a frequent behaviour in C. albiceps and C. rufi facies that occurs as an alternative food source during the larval stage. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of intraguild predation by C. albiceps on other fl y species in order to analyse interspecifi c and intraspecifi c survival in C. albiceps, C. megacephala and C. macellaria Fabricius. The experimental design of the study allowed us to evaluate how factors such as species, density and abundance of food infl uenced the survival of the calliphorid species. When C. albiceps was confi ned with C. megacephala or C. macellaria, only adults of C. albiceps survived at different larval densities and abundance of food. In addition, the survival of C. albiceps was higher in two-species experiments when compared to single species experiments. The implications of these results for the dynamics of C. albiceps were discussed.

Magnesium is a metal used in the composition of titanium alloys and imparts porosity. Due to its osteoconductive, biocompatible and biodegradable characteristics, its application in the development of biomedical materials has become attractive. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of magnesium present in porous Ti-Nb-Sn alloys, which have a low elastic modulus in adhesive, osteogenic properties and the amount of reactive intracellular oxygen species released in mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow equine bone (eBMMSCs). Mechanical properties of the alloy, such as hardness, compressive strength and elastic modulus, were analyzed, as well as surface morphological characteristics through scanning electron microscopy. The evaluation of magnesium ion release was performed by atomic force spectroscopy. The biological characteristics of the alloy, when in contact with the alloy surface and with the culture medium conditioned with the alloy, were studied by SEM and optical microscopy. Confirmation of osteogenic differentiation by alizarin red and detection of ROS using a Muse® Oxidative Stress Kit based on dihydroetide (DHE). The alloy showed an elastic modulus close to cortical bone values. The hardness was close to commercial Ti grade 2, and the compressive strength was greater than the value of cortical bone. The eBMMSCs adhered to the surface of the alloy during the experimental time. Osteogenic differentiation was observed with the treatment of eBMMMSCs with conditioned medium. The eBMMSCs treated with conditioned medium decreased ROS production, indicating a possible antioxidant defense potential of magnesium release.
In this study we investigated the population dynamics of Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) with laboratory experiments, employing survival analysis and stage structure mathematical models, emphasizing survival among life stages. The study also assessed the theoretical in luence of density dependence and cannibalism during immature stages, on the population dynamics of the species. The survival curves were similar, indicating that populations of C. albiceps exhibit the same pattern of survival among life stages. A strong nonlinear trend was observed, suggesting density dependence, acting during the irst life stages of C. albiceps. The time-series simulations produced chaotic oscillations for all life stages, and the cannibalism did not produce qualitative changes in the dynamic behavior. The bifurcation analysis shows that for low values for survival, the population reaches a stable equilibrium, but the cannibalism results in chaotic oscillations practically over all the parametric space. The implications of the patterns of dynamic behavior observed are discussed.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Psyllium (PSY) and Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) administration on fecal elimination of sand in horses with asymptomatic sand accumulations. Eight horses were selected from sandy areas and randomly divided into 2 groups of four animals. The subjects were treated either with CMC or PSY. The presence of intestinal sand was confirmed through radiography and glove sedimentation test. The study was performed in two phases, with a 7-day interval. In phase I, all the animals received 8 liters of warm water; in phase II, the CMC group received 8 liters of water + 1g/kg of CMC, whereas the PSY group received 8 liters of water + 1g/kg of PSY. All administrations were performed through nasogastric intubation and fractionated in 2 equal volume administrations with an interval of two hours. General and specific physical examination of the digestive system were performed in conjunction with abdominal ultrasonography before the administrations and after 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours, aiming to evaluate intestinal motility and presence of sand. All the feces eliminated by the animals within the 72 hours following the administrations were quantified, diluted and sedimented in order to calculate the sand output (g/kg of feces). All the animals were also subjected to radiographic examination to quantify sand accumulation prior to phase I and after 72 hours of phases I and II. No adverse effects were observed after the treatments. It was possible to notice higher sand elimination in both groups during the phase I, whereas no difference was observed in sand elimination rates between the groups in phase II. The radiographic scores presented differences between the initial timepoint and 72h in phases I and II for both groups. Based on the sand elimination rates and radiographic score, this study demonstrated that sand output was greater after administration of water alone, compared to CMC and Psyllium, leading to the inference that removal of the sandy environment and prevention of sand re-ingestion are effective measures for the elimination of sand from the colon of horses with asymptomatic sand accumulations.
