Evaluation of Some Chenopodium Quinoa Cultivars Under Saline Soil Conditions in Egypt

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate seed yield, morphological variability and nutritional quality for two cultivars of Chenopodium quinoa under high saline soil conditions (ECe 22 dSm-1) in Egyptian Northeastern coast. Responses to salinity were greatly differed between the two cultivars. The Peruvian cultivar CICA produced seed yield significantly higher than Bolivian cultivar Real. CICA cultivar also showed significant high performances for most of morphological traits. Among the 10 morphological traits, leaves dry… Show more

“…These studies show that the phenotypic behavior of quinoa does not have particularly extreme values for any of the evaluated variables and that the variability of the morphological characters results from environmental factors that can be controlled by genes with pleiotropic or epistatic effects (Farooq et al, 2018). The values found in the other quantitative variables were similar to those reported in other genetic diversity studies on quinoa (Afiah et al, 2018;Ebrahim et al, 2018;Infante et al, 2018;Morillo et al, 2020). The analysis of correlations showed that the highest value was obtained with the variable AP, which, in P1, had a perfect and negative correlation with AHI (r = -1), a negative correlation with DT (r = -0.97) and a positive, significant correlation with DP (r = 0.94).…”

“…Based on the correlations of all the variables and the evaluated populations, the phenotype of the material was highly influenced by the environment. Correlation studies are an important step in quinoa improvement programs since the information that is obtained is useful for estimating the correlated response to selection for the formulation of selection indices (Afiah et al, 2018;Al-Naggar et al, 2018, Ebrahim et al, 2018.…”

“…The two quinoa cultivars belong to different ecotypes, since Hualhuas is a Peruvian cultivar belonging to a Altiplano type, while Cica is a Peruvian cultivar belonging to a Valley type. In addition, the obtained results are in a good agreement with the results obtained by Ebrahim et al (2018) who found that Cica cultivar is highly adapted for cultivation under Egyptian conditions.…”

“…ion toxicity, loss of chloroplast activity, decreased photosynthetic rate and increased photorespiration rate that leads to an increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production (Parida and Das, 2005). Previous studies have focused on quinoa's tolerance to soil salinity, with particular emphasis on plant physiology (Shabala et al, 2013 andWu et al, 2016) and agronomic parameters such as plant height, leaf fresh and dry weight, number of leaves and inflorescence plant -1 , yield and harvest index (Peterson andMurphy, 2015 andEbrahim et al, 2018). Proline is a several function amino acid that besides acting as an excellent osmolyte is also known for stabilizing sub-cellular structures such as proteins and cell membranes, scavenging free radicals (Chen and Dickman, 2005), balancing cellular homeostasis and signaling molecule and buffering redox potential under stress conditions (Szabados and Savoure, 2009).…”
