Evaluation of six-point modified dixon and magnetic resonance spectroscopy for fat quantification: a fat–water–iron phantom study

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate (1) the agreement between the true fat fraction (FF) and proton density FF (PDFF) measured using a six-echo modified Dixon (6mDixon) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and (2) the influence of fat on T2* values. The study was performed using phantoms of varying fat and iron content. Point-resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) and stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM) with single-echo (S) and multiecho (M) (PRESS-S, PRESS-M, STEAM-S, and STEAM-M) were used for MRS. In phantoms wit… Show more

“…The 6–point Dixon sequence generated in–phase, out–of–phase, water–only, and fat–only images during the scanning session. 15 The scanner automatically generated FF maps, and FF was then calculated. 27,43 This modified 6–point Dixon sequence included a repetition time of 12 ms; echo times of 1.23, 2.7, 4.17, 5.64, 7.11, and 8.58 ms; a flip angle of 9°; a matrix size of 188 × 288; a field of view of 320 mm; and a slice thickness of 2 mm.…”

“…The multigradient echo sequence used in this study does not only accurately quantify pancreatic lipomatosis but would also correct for T2*-decay pronounced in iron deposition in the pancreas. 46 Magnetization transfer in theory would be decreased in the presence of excessive iron overload, but not in limited iron overload. 47 Iron deposition in the pancreas is mainly described in hemochromatosis or thalassemia major.…”

“…Up till now, many MR scientists have already used oilin-water (o/w) emulsions for validation and comparison of various water or fat MRI-based quantification methods [8][9][10][11][12][13][14], but also to study changes in the MR signal of water in the presence of fat and vice versa [15]. In MR technology, there are a number of different approaches for determining the fat content in tissue.…”
