Evaluation of silibinin on the viability, migration and adhesion of the human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC‐3) cell line

Abstract: Prostate cancer (PCA) is the most common cancer diagnosed in men and the second most common cause of death due to cancers after lung cancer. Metastasis of cancer cells involves multiple processes and various cytophysiological changes, including changed adhesion capability between cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) and damaged intercellular interaction. Silibinin, a naturally occurring flavonoid antioxidant found in the milk thistle, has recently been shown to have potent antiproliferative effect against vari… Show more

“…At concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 100 µM of cisplatin MCF-7cell viability was reduced to 84.0 ± 12.4 (statistically insignificant, p > 0.05), 67.2 ± 12.4 (p < 0.05), 35.6 ± 3.4 (p <0.001) and 30.7 ± 2.5 % (p < 0.001), respectively. LC 50 of cisplatin after 24 h was 143.4 ± 14.6 µg/ml, as reported in our previous study [10].…”

“…The cells were incubated with different concentrations of cisplatin (0, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 100 µM) at 24 h. Each concentration of cisplatin was tested on 3 wells of the 96-well plates containing 1×10 4 MCF-7cells. In each experiment, three MCF-7 cultured wells with no drug incubation were used as negative controls [10].…”

“…[21][22][23][24][25] It has been shown to modulate the expression of large numbers of miRNAs, small [22][23][24][25] nucleotides long non-coding RNAs, in cancer cells that lead to reduction of tumor growth. [26][27][28] Also, miRNAs play an important role in the modulation of chemosensitivity of tumor cells.…”

“…Silibinin possesses strong anticancer efficacy against both androgen-dependent and androgen-independent prostate cancer, wherein it inhibits not only cell growth, but also cell invasion and metastasis (11)(12)(13)(14). In prostate cancer PC-3 cells, silibinin exerts inhibitory effects on cell viability, adhesion and migration (13).…”
