Evaluation of Salivary Alpha Amylase as a Biomarker for Dental Anxiety

Abstract: Background: The anxiety of dental conditions is very common. Salivary alpha amylase (SAA) enzyme, as a non-invasive biomarker, is considered in assessing dental anxiety.

“…Acute stress activates the axis of sympathetic nervous system, adrenal medulla, which is reflected not only in the concentration of salivary alpha-amylase, but also in the concentration of salivary chromogranin A [ 46 ]. The usefulness of salivary alpha-amylase as a salivary biomarker of acute stress and anxiety was confirmed by Jafari et al [ 66 ] pointing to its reliability and objectivity in the measurement of anxiety associated with dental treatment. In turn, Vineetha et al [ 67 ] showed that alpha-amylase activity in the saliva increases in patients experiencing chronic stress.…”

“…Salivary alpha-amylase has also been shown to be a biomarker sensitive to physiological stress resulting from increased sympathetic nerve activity. Since salivary gland secretion is controlled by direct sympathetic stimulation, salivary alpha-amylase has been suggested as an alternative marker of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, with changes in salivary alphaamylase reflecting sympathetic effects on salivary glands (8).…”

“…As alterações emocionais, como a ansiedade e o estresse, têm sido relacionadas à produção de biomarcadores salivares, como a α-amilase, que representa a atividade do sistema nervoso autônomo simpático 10,[24][25] . Contudo, no presente estudo, a α-amilase salivar mensurada pelo Cocoro Meter ® não produziu resposta semelhante às outras variáveis mensuradas.…”
