Evaluation of olfactory dysfunction in the connecticut chemosensory clinical research center

Abstract: The olfactory test administered to patients at the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center combines stability of outcome with sensitivity to variables known to affect olfaction (age, sex). The test, which pairs an odor threshold component with an odor identification component, readily resolves differences in function between patients and controls. It reveals differences in the distribution of functioning for various probable causes (nasal/sinus disease, postupper respiratory infection, and head traum… Show more

“…Our investigations entail very short exposures (1-2 sec), a simple but effective static delivery system: the squeeze bottles 14,15 , and the consistent use of a standardized procedure (e.g., 16 ). As described below, the method consists of a two-alternative, forced-choice procedure with presentation of increasing concentration steps until achieving a fixed criterion for threshold: five correct choices in a row (e.g., 17 ).…”

“…After collecting data about their disease, and about the presence or absence of an olfactory complaint, the patients took the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center olfactory test 15 . Only patients who had regular olfactory function (normosmia) underwent the screening 16 .…”

“…In both stages, each nasal cavity is assessed separately during the presentation of smells, closing them one at a time by digital compression, as it is possible to present with unilateral hyposmia/anosmia. During the test, the patient remained blindfolded 15 .…”
