We investigated anaerobic threshold (< èL) gas exchange kinetics and maximal oxygen uptake (ýOµ,max) among older men with reduced left ventricular end-diastolic filling (LVDF). Ten men (mean age, 73 years) with LVDF impairment and low fitness, but without other cardiovascular dysfunction were studied. Treatments compared to control included: 5 days, high intensity exercise training protocol; 5 days, calcium channel blockade (240 mg verapamil); 21 days, detrainingÏwashout; and 5 days, combined treatments. Results indicated no changes in resting left ventricular systolic function with any treatment. Significant resting diastolic function changes included increased early:late flow velocity (control, 0.87; training, 1.28; verapamil, 1.32), and a decreased isovolumic relaxation time (control, 0.10 s; training, 0.08 s; verapamil, 0.08 s). The combined treatments were not additive. Sub-threshold oxygen uptake kinetics (ôVOµ, s) were significantly faster following either training or verapamil (ôVOµ,control, 62 ± 12; ôVOµ,training, 44 ± 9; ôVOµ,verapamil, 48 ± 10) and combined treatments (ôVOµ, 41 ± 8). ýOµ,max (ml kg¢ min¢) was significantly increased (control, 21.8 ± 2.2; training, 27.3 ± 2.2; verapamil, 25.2 ± 3.4; combined treatments, 26.9 ± 2.3). Increasing ventricular preload with either exercise training or calcium channel blockade was coincident with faster ôVOµ and increased ýOµ,max.

Pesq. Vet. Bras. 32(9) The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of blood constituents in a group of horses that successfully completed long endurance rides in tropical conditions. Jugular vein puncture was done to collect blood before, during and after rides. Data were analyzed using a mathematic approach, based on the hematocrit and blood volume where the percentual change in plasma volume was used to correct the values of each variable analyzed. Signiϐicance was inferred when P<0.05. The proposed mathematical model to assess blood constituents concentrations allowed the observation of a different pattern of the variables behavior, pointing out that the approach followed by the authors could be more sensitive than ones that did not take this routine. In conclusion, the method used in this study enabled to monitor the physiological processes that actually occur during endurance effort in tropical conditions.

We investigated the change in body composition and hydration status in one male ultra-endurance swimmer during a 24-hour swim. Body mass, percent body fat and skeletal muscle mass using the anthropometric method as well as total body water using bioelectrical impedance analysis were determined pre race, every 6 hours and after the race. Parameters of hydration status (urinary specific gravity, haematocrit, plasma sodium) and skeletal muscle damage (plasma urea) were measured at the same time. The swimmer achieved a total distance of 41.1 km. Body mass decreased by 1.6 kg, skeletal muscle mass by 1.5 kg, body fat by 2.4 kg and total body water by 3.9 l. Urinary specific gravity remained unchanged at 1.015 g/ml. Haematocrit increased from 46 to 47, plasma volume decreased by 4 % and plasma sodium by 4.0 mmol/l. We found in this ultra-swimmer a decrease in body mass of 1.7 % and a consistent urinary specific gravity of 1.015 g/ml. According to the general concept of dehydration, this corresponds to minimal dehydration.
