Evaluation of Genetic Diversity among Persian Fig Cultivars by Morphological Traits and RAPD Markers

Abstract: Ficus carica L. is one of the most ancient fruit trees cultivated in Persia (Iran). The conservation and characterization of fig genetic resources is essential for sustainable fig production and food security. Given these considerations, this study characterizes the genetic variability of 21 edible F. carica cultivars in the Fars Province using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. The collected cultivars were also characterized for their… Show more

“…Based on a Condit's early work [7], the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) supplied an official descriptors list for Ficus carica L. accessions or cultivars [8], allowing the scientific communities to carry out characterization and identification work using the standardized method. Studies on fig germplasm characterization have been carried out by different authors using morphological traits [9][10][11][12][13], and their combination with chemical compounds [14,15], or with gene marker-based approaches [16][17][18][19].…”

“…It seems that difference among these studies was related to sampling distances. In both studies, Salhi-Hannachi et al (2005) and Baziar et al (2018), plant samples were collected from two localities or one province, while we collected fourteen populations from different parts of Iran. The distance between our studied populations were very long and in some cases exceed than 2500 km.…”

“…More recently,Baziar et al (2018) evaluated genetic variations of 21 populations of F. carica from Iran (Fars province) and they reported the partitioning of genetic difference among fig population and illustrate the greater variation for within populations.…”
