Evaluation of digital optical density of bone repair in rats medicated with ketoprofen

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of ketoprofen on bone repair process in tibiae of rats by means of analysis of the digital optical density. Twenty Wistar rats were assigned to two groups: an untreated control group and a group treated with ketoprofen. The experimental procedures comprised the following stages: general anesthesia, preparation of a unicortical bone defect on the left tibia of each rat, medication with ketoprofen and radiographic examination. Digital radiographic images we… Show more

“…Some animal studies have investigated the effects of ketoprofen, meloxicam, and diclofenac on bone healing, and some of these studies showed that these drugs impair the bone healing process, whereas others showed that these drugs did not affect the healing process [7,[39][40][41][42][43].…”

“…Studying the action of ketoprofen in rats tibia repair, Martins et al (2005), noticed a negative influence of the drug on bone density when the administration exceeded 21 days. Possibly, this is one of the reasons why the obtained results from the present study did not agree with those found in literature.…”

“…The healing process of fractures and bone defects is characterized by bone tissue regeneration; this phenomenon is due to the stimulation of specific growth factors that act on stromal cells arising from the inflammatory process, and in physiological conditions, may result in the formation of bone matrix. There is also evidence to suggest that ketoprofen does not seem to interfere with these processes in animal models (86,87). One study compared the effects of ketoprofen with a placebo control group in tibial defects in rats digitally analyzing the bone density up to 21 days after osteotomy (86).…”
