Evaluation of Calcium Application Methods on Delaying Plant Wilting under Water Deficit in Bedding Plants

Abstract: Floriculture crops can lose their aesthetic quality due to water deficit during postproduction. Calcium is a secondary messenger in plant stress signaling, and the treatment of calcium has been proposed to alleviate damage by various abiotic stresses. The objective of this research was to evaluate application methods of calcium to delay plant wilting under water deficiency in three species of bedding plants: viola (Viola cornuta), impatiens (Impatiens walleriana), and petunia (Petunia grandiflora). Three appli… Show more

“…The promptness of the response depends on the number of neurons connecting the stimuli. In plants, the repertoire of secondary messengers, i.e., ROS, Ca 2+ , NO, SA, JA and pipecolic acid, plays a crucial role in memory response [ 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 ]. Short-term memory is not always associated with transcriptional reprogramming in both plants and animals.…”

“…On the other hand, the implication of NO in stress recovery is also mediated through induction of other growth regulators where ABA is frequently observed, and even more so under osmotic and salinity stress [11]. In these cases, dehydration-induced NO signaling often matches the rise in ABA and its related biosynthetic and metabolic genes like 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) [12].…”
