Evaluation of an atrophic rhinitis vaccine under controlled conditions

Abstract: A vaccine containing inactivated cultures of Bordetella bronchiseptica, toxigenic Pasteurella multocida type D and dermonecrotic P multocida type D toxoid in an oil-in-water adjuvant was given to seven sows, with seven others acting as controls. Half the piglets in each litter were exposed intranasally when four days old to B bronchiseptica and when eight days old to toxigenic P multocida type D. There was considerably less sneezing in the litters of the vaccinated sows and when the piglets were 10 weeks old, … Show more

“…The proportion was 5 times (nasal swabs) and 3 times (tonsils) higher than in piglets from a study performed with a vaccine containing Bb/Pm/fPMT adjuvanted with oil in water in the Netherlands (Voets et al, 1992). This may be due to differences in the bacterial vaccine components, the adjuvant or the challenge strains.…”

“…Previous experiments have shown that the dermonecrotic toxin (DNT) of B. bronchiseptica and P. multocida are virulence factors producing AR [7,11,12]. Therefore, the bacterin and/or toxoid [22] containing B. bronchiseptica and toxigenic capsular serotype D P. multocida were developed, and these vaccines were prophylactic against experimental AR with B. bronchiseptica and toxigenic capsular serotype D P. multocida [1,14,24,36]. Although there is little information about toxigenic capsular serotype A P. multocida associated with AR [4,10,13,33], it has been suggested that the immunological quality of DNT of both serotype A and D P. multocida origin is identical by in vitro experiments [5,16], the toxin gene of serotypes A and D being identical [17].…”

“…DNT of B. bronchiseptica and DNT of P. multocida have been recognized as a development of AR [7,11,12], and DNT of serotype A and D P. multocida origin were identical in an in vitro experiment [15,16]. Various vaccines containing bacterin and/or toxoid of B. bronchiseptica and DNT-producing serotype D P. multocida are being used worldwide, but these vaccines have been evaluated against experimental AR with B. bronchiseptica and DNT-producing serotype D P. multocida [1,14,24,36]. In the present study, piglets were challenged with B. bronchiseptica and DNT-producing serotype A P. multocida, and consequently all of non-vaccinated group showed severe or moderate nasal turbinate atrophy at slaughter, which has been described in reports on inoculation with B. bronchiseptica and toxigenic P. multocida serotype D [23,[27][28][29]32], but none of the pigs showed signs of AR.…”

“…Nimierous experiments have directly supported the claim that lesions of PAR are signific2intly correlated with weight gain and/or feed efficiency during the growing and finishing periods (9,10,11,12,38,170,174). Other experiments have arrived at equivocal results, with negative correlations between PAR and ADG being significant tn only sections of some studies (14,120,130).…”

“…where Ngn pop = number needed to sample given a specific population size, Njuf pop = the number needed to sample given a population of infinite number and N = the number in the finite population This ELISA detects presence of the dermonecrotic toxin produced specifically by toxigenic P. multocida (58,170), solving the problem of serologic cross reactions with nontoxigenic strains and related bacteria.…”
