Atrophic rhinitis vaccine composition triggers different serological profiles that do not correlate with protection

Abstract: Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a widespread and economically important disease of swine caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida. It can be controlled by vaccination. This study investigates the effect of altering the composition (adjuvants and/or addition of formalin-inactivated P. multocida toxin, fPMT) of conventional vaccines on the serological profile and on protection against AR in swine. A significantly higher B. bronchiseptica specific antibody titre was detected for vaccines with novel… Show more

“…Vaccination using toxin-based component vaccines, bacterins, or live attenuated bacteria is effective against toxin-mediated disease, such as atrophic rhinitis (449,471,(541)(542)(543)(544)(545)(546)(547)(548)(549)(550)(551)(552). A commercial swine vaccine based on P. multocida bacterin-toxoid (BT) conferred protective immunity in rabbits against PMT challenge (553).…”

“…In contrast, the Montanide TM series of immunostimulants are comparatively nontoxic. Montanide IMS 1313 N VGPR (IMS 1313) adjuvant, consisting of water‐dispersed liquid nanoparticles combined with an immunostimulating compound, has been widely used in animal vaccine research . In this study, IMS1313/rTs‐serpin vaccine exhibited higher level in induction of humoral immunity and similar level in cellular immunity and worm reduction compared to the FCA‐/FIA‐formulated vaccine.…”
