Evaluation of Agaricus blazei in vivo for antigenotoxic, anticarcinogenic, phagocytic and immunomodulatory activities

Abstract: The development of various types of cancer results from the interaction among endogenous, environmental and hormonal factors, where the most notable of these factors is diet. The aim of the present study was to determine the antigenotoxic, anticarcinogenic, phagocytic and immunomodulatory activities of Agaricus blazei. The test antigenotoxicity (Comet Assay) and anticarcinogenic (Test of Aberrant Crypt Foci) assess changes in DNA and/or intestinal mucosa that correlate to cancer development. Tests of phagocyto… Show more

“…We selected 3 protocols from those proposed in the literature: pre-treatment, simultaneous, and post-treatment. An alternative protocol of pre + continuous proposed by Ishii et al (2011) was also used. This simple treatment protocol indicates desmutagenic or bioantimutagenic activity; the pretreatment protocol largely indicates bioantimutagenic activity, and the post-treatment protocol exclusively shows bioantimutagenic activity.…”

“…The diet was supplemented with wheat grains ground and dried at a concentration of 100 g/kg as specified in a previous study conducted in Centro de Estudos em Nutrição e Genética Toxicológica with other types of fiber (Ishii et al, 2011). This prepared food was offered daily to the animals ad libitum.…”

“…In general, the induction of DNA damage (demonstrated by an elevated frequency of comets and micronuclei) is directly correlated with increased spleen phagocytic activity (Ishii et al, 2011;Gonçalves et al, 2014). Thus, this increased phagocytic activity is another potential means of clearing damaged cells, possibly indicating a new mode of action and/or behavior of the body to eliminate cells with genetic abnormalities.…”
