Evaluation of a tidal flat sediment nourishment as estuarine management measure

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe tidal flats in the Eastern Scheldt tidal basin (The Netherlands) are eroding as a result of the construction of the storm surge barrier. These intertidal areas are important foraging grounds for birds and therefore it is important to mitigate the negative effects of erosion. As a pilot, a small part (20 ha) of the Galgeplaat tidal flat in the middle of the Eastern Scheldt was nourished with 130,000 m 3 of sediment in 2008. This paper investigates this tidal flat nourishment using a large set… Show more

“…These, partly independent, temporal fluctuations shall have consequences for the long-term evolution of intertidal shoals. As sediment transport on the relatively sandy Roggenplaat takes place especially during energetic meteorological events (Figure 15), as also observed on other intertidal areas (e.g., Green et al, 1997;Van der Werf et al, 2015), those events are likely fundamental for the morphological evolution of such a shoal.…”

“…Successful marsh restoration projects may request temporarily opening upstream river dams or creating river diversions to direct sediment-rich water into managed marsh systems (Mariotti & Fagherazzi, 2013;Nittrouer et al, 2012). When these watershed-scale operations are not feasible, local sediment-nourishment operations that increase tidal flat convexity can be considered to accommodate seedling establishment (Baptist et al, 2019;van der Werf et al, 2015). Unlike sandy beaches, where nourishment is a common practice (Stive et al, 2013), nourishing muddy tidal flats using dredged sediment remains relatively unexplored.…”
