Evaluating barley feed fractions from integrated ethanol-starch production in diets of ruminants

Abstract: Abstract. A new process for the integrated production of ethanol and starch yields barley fractions with different types and contents of carbohydrates and protein. The barley hulls and bran consist mainly of lignocellulose, the barley molasses has considerable contents of sugars and soluble protein, the barley protein contains 40 % protein and has a low fibre level, while the barley fibre consists mainly of cereal cell walls and its NDF is high. The amino acid content of the barley fractions is almost the same… Show more

“…Barley fibre, obtained by sieving the cell wall material of barley endosperm, was pressed mechanically by screw press for dewatering and dried with a drum and combined to barley molasses. DDS was received after distillation of the non-fermentables of B-starch by evaporation and drying with a spraydryer (Näsi 1988 …”

“…1984). Other protein supplements, barley protein and dried distillers solubles (DDS), are now available from integrated ethanol-starch production (Näsi 1988). The annual production will be soon about 10million kg.…”

“…Barley fibre is a fibrous product comprised mainly of the cell wall fraction of barley endosperm and is used as energy source in cattle feeding. A detailed description of the integrated starch-ethanol process and the products of the process are given by Näsi (1988). As the integrated starch-ethanol process can be used also for the production of bio-ethanol, it is evident that increasing quantities of by-products will be produced in the future.…”

“…Distiller's solubles, a by-product from the integrated starch-ethanol process (NÄSI 1988) are mainly used as a protein source for dairy cattle. Increasing dietary crude protein (CP) concentration by including dried distiller's solubles (DDS) in a grass silagebased diet had no effect on milk yield or milk composition (Ala-Seppälä et al 1988).…”
