Ethylenediamine-Assisted Solvent Extraction of Coal in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone:  Synergistic Effect of Ethylenediamine on Extraction of Coal in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone

Abstract: Coals ranging from lignite to high rank bituminous coal were extracted with N-methyl-2pyrrolidone (NMP), ethylenediamine (EDA), and NMP containing a small amount of EDA (e,N) under reflux conditions at atmospheric pressure. The extraction yield was maximum in the third case suggesting a synergistic effect of the system. The system was found to enhance the extraction yield in NMP. Stepwise successive extraction in NMP was also possible using this system. A possible explanation for the results obtained is given.

“…Research work in the authors' laboratory had been extended on organorefining of coals and lignites to obtain superclean coal having ultra low ash contents (less than 1%; Pande and Sharma, 2002). Research was also performed on the organodesulfurization of coals and lignites (Das and Sharma, 2001).…”

“…Solvent extraction of coal resulted in the removal of organic sulfur from coals and lignites and, in fact, Bhatia (2007) reported the use of an organorefining technique using NMP containing a small amount of EDA; that is, an e, N solvent system to remove organic sulfur from coal. Since e, N solvent system was found to be a potential solvent for not only organorefining (Pande and Sharma, 2002) but also for the organodesulfurization of coals and lignites, in the present work the use of this potential solvent system was also extended on the organodesulfurization of petcoke.…”

“…Dosodia et al subjected to chemical cleaning using aqueous NaOH treatment followed by H 2 SO 4 leaching using the procedure reported by Sharma and Gihar (27). Organo-refining of Pasang coal was performed using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) containing a small amount of ethylenediamine following the procedure reported by Pande and Sharma (28) and super clean coal (SCC) was recovered by precipitation and washing. All the coal samples were carbonized at 1000uC.…”

“…Both the techniques of refining coal (i.e., inorgano-leaching) (Sharma and Gihar, 1991;Sharma and Singh, 1995a;Nabeel et al, 2009) using alkali-acid or acid alone as well as organo-refining (Sharma and Mishra, 1989;Mishra and Sharma, 1990;Sharma and Singh, 1996;Pande and Sharma, 2002) using common coal-derived and industrial organic solvents have been studied extensively by the research groups of the author.…”
