a b s t r a c tAccording to recent studies, the antioxidant and anticancer related properties of European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) leaf extracts are remarkable, making it a possible raw material for medicine, requiring the identification of major active compounds and the assessment of the antioxidant properties of the extracts. In the present work the high-performance liquid chromatographic/multistage mass spectrometric characterization of the antioxidant polyphenolic compounds as well as the evaluation of the seasonal changes in the major antioxidant capacity and related parameters (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, total phenol content, total flavonoid content and total flavan-3-ol content) have been carried out for the leaves of European hornbeam for the first time. The extracts exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity in August, basing on the FRAP (106.24 ± 3.10 mg AAE/g dw.) and DPPH (IC 50 : 4.63 ± 0.88 g/ml) assays and in May, based on the ABTS (329.78 ± 23.89 mg TE/g dw.) method. From the August extract a total of 171 compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoid glycosides, tannins, catechins and procyanidins have been characterized and identified. According to the HPLC-PDA peak areas, the most abundant polyphenolic compounds in the August extracts were chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, ellagitannins, myricetin-, luteolin-, quercetin-and apigenin glycosides. Further research is needed for the elucidation of the compounds which are primarily responsible for the antioxidant properties.

Objective: To evaluate the preliminary phytochemical analysis and in vitro antioxidant activity, anti-diabetic effect of ethanolic seed extract of Acacia catechu against the alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase digestive enzymes in the pancreas and small intestine. Methods: Preliminary phytochemical analysis was done by adopting the method of Evans. Antioxidant assay is performed by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assay, Anti diabetic activity was determined by modified method of miller, the extract at different concentrations was tested for mammalian alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase enzyme inhibitory assay under the controlled experimental conditions and subjected to determination of absorbance. Results: The present study reveals the presence of few secondary metabolites and the extract exhibits potent Antioxidant activity and a concentration dependent inhibition of Alpha amylase and Alpha glucosidase. Conclusion: From the present study it can be concluded that ethanolic seed extract of Acacia catechu possessed marked in vitro antioxidant and anti-diabetic effect. The effect was plausibly due to the presence of phenolic contents of Acacia catechu.

Objective: The present study undertakes a comparative analysis of the level of secondary metabolites present in the leaf, flower and stem of the two ornamental plants, Allamanda blanchetii and Allamanda cathartica. Methods:The two plant species, Allamanda blanchetii and Allamanda cathartica were collected, washed, shade dried in room temperature and powered in mechanical grinder. Phytochemicals were extracted from the power with methanol and double distilled water. The estimation of flavonoids, polyphenols, polysaccharide were done by standard methods and the anti-oxidant activity was measured by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) discoloration assay.Results: Our study reveals that the flower of both species contain highest amount of secondary metabolites in crude methanolic and aqueous extracts. In case of leaf, the methanolic extracts contain higher amount of polyphenol, flavonoid and anti-oxidant property in comparison to aqueous extracts, where as the aqueous extract contain higher amount of polysaccharide content than its counterpart. In stem, crude organic extract has higher amount of polyphenol and flavonoid and the aqueous extract has higher amount of polysaccharide and anti-oxidant property. Conclusion:The flower of Allamanda cathartica and Allamanda blanchetii has higher amount of flavonoids, polyphenols, polysaccharide and the floral extracts display comparatively higher anti-oxidant property.
