Estimating Pulmonary Function, Interleukin-6 (IL-6), And Superoxide Dismutase-3 (EC-SOD3) Levels in Patients with Chronic Bronchial Asthma on Curcumin Adjuvant Therapy

Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of curcumin supplement as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in patients with chronic bronchial asthma. Forty patients diagnosed with chronic bronchial asthma were enrolled in this study and allocated into group (1) patients   assigned to receive conventional therapy of asthma, and group (2) patient assigned to receive conventional therapy of asthma combined with 750 mg curcumin supplement twice daily for two months. Pulmonary function test, asthma control t… Show more

“…71 In another study, the administration of curcumin (1.5 mg/day) and piperine (5 mg/day) for 2 months resulted in the efficient alleviation of IL-6 and improvement in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and asthma control test scores in bronchial asthma patients compared to those who received regular asthma drugs. 72 Moreover, this formulation (1−1.5 g/day curcumin with 5 mg/day piperine) reduced the symptoms including weakness, dry cough, sore throat, sputum cough, ague muscular pain, headache, dyspnea, deterioration, and hospitalized duration in COVID-19 patients without side effects. 73,74 Besides, the treatment with this formulation significantly improved mouth opening flexibility, cheek flexibility, and tongue protrusion capacity and suppressed burning sensation in oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) patients compared to placebo (starch and lactose capsules).…”

“…Moreover, 1000 mg/day of curcumin along with standard therapy for 30 days produced a remarkable reduction in ESR, eosinophils, and adverse events and improved weight and forced expiratory volume in 60 patients with bronchial asthma . Another study showed that curcumin 1500 mg/day along with piperine 5 mg/day for 30 days remarkably decreased expression of IL-6 and increased forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity, and asthma control test score in bronchial asthma ( n = 40) . In addition, the consumption of curcumin 375 mg thrice daily for 12 weeks was shown to improve chronic anterior uveitis .…”

“…The ratio of FEV1/FVC was also increased by 12.7% in patients on curcumin supplementation. 39 In a preliminary clinical study, 15 adult patients with stable and persistent asthma with evidence of allergic sensitization were randomly received curcumin (1000 mg, twice daily) or placebo for 6 months. The treatment did not affect post-bronchodilator FEV1 (primary endpoint) and rescue use of bronchodilators.…”
