Estimates of the number of people in England who attain or exceed vigorous intensity exercise by walking at 3 mph

Abstract: Walking is a safe, accessible and low cost activity, amenable to change and known to have great potential to increase physical activity levels in sedentary individuals. The objective of this study is to estimate the proportion of the 2009 adult population of England who would attain or exceed vigorous intensity activity (470% maximum heart rate [HR max ]) by walking at 3 mph. We conducted predictive impact modelling using participants' (n ¼ 1741, aged 25-64 years) cardiovascular fitness data from treadmill wal… Show more

“…Only eight participants reported taking part in any regular sports or leisure activity in the community in the PPAQ. However, fitness can be achieved by brisk walking,32 and participants spent a mean of just over 3 h per day walking (IPAQ) a mean of 4.67 miles (PPAQ). This exceeded minimum activity levels generally recommended for a week on every average day 1…”

“…It is estimated that 5.4 million people in the United Kindom would attain or exceed vigorous relative intensity (>70% of VO 2peak ) by walking at ≈4.8 km/h [10]. Therefore, even low absolute PA, if performed at high relative intensity, has potential to benefit many by improving CRF, which is a powerful predictor of mortality [11, 10].…”

“…Therefore, even low absolute PA, if performed at high relative intensity, has potential to benefit many by improving CRF, which is a powerful predictor of mortality [11, 10]. However, relative PA assessment in a population is hindered by methodological limitations [12] and until recently, the only available relative thresholds were derived from physical exertion of young to middle-aged healthy adults.…”
