Absolute and relative accelerometer thresholds for determining the association between physical activity and metabolic syndrome in the older adults: The Generation-100 study

Abstract: Background: When assessing population adherence to physical activity (PA) recommendation using accelerometers, absolute intensity threshold definition is applied despite having limited validity in those with low cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), who are unable to reach them (e.g older adults). Thus, PA thresholds relative to CRF may be an alternative approach. We compared the proportion of the older adults meeting the PA recommendation when PA is assessed using absolute versus sex-and-CRF-adjusted (relative) ac… Show more

“…While our data provide novel insights into influence of PA behaviors on physical function in older women, caution should be taken when generalizing study findings from our smaller sample to a broader population of older men and women with different health conditions. Although based on the most commonly used accelerometer cut points, other count thresholds incorporating fitness level have been presented . Hence, the choice of accelerometer count threshold should be noted when viewing data on time spent in different PA intensities.…”

“…Only data collecting from 6 am until 11:59 pm were included in the analysis. 31 Sustained 60 minutes of zero were classified as a period of non-wear time, with a tolerance of two minutes with non-zero values less than 100 CPM. 30 Data were included in the analysis if participants wore the accelerometers for a minimum of four days, including one weekend day.…”

“…Higher risk MetS was also reported to be linked with higher age, being obese, Indian ethnicity, lower education level, unemployment and shift workers [ 14 ]. Meanwhile, MetS prevalence among general women population in other Asian and Western countries were at similar rate such as India (43.2%) [ 18 ], China (34.2%) [ 19 ], Thailand (36.4%) [ 20 ], Spain (30.7%) [ 21 ], Norway (34.2%) [ 22 ] and Netherland (44.0%) [ 23 ]. Uniquely, Korea only reported 11.4% of MetS prevalence among their population [ 24 ].…”
