Essential Oregano Oil as a Growth Promoter for the Yellowtail Tetra, Astyanax altiparanae

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of oregano oil as a growth promoter for the yellowtail tetra, Astyanax altiparanae. The fish (1.46 ± 0.09 g) were distributed into twenty‐four 60‐L aquaria at a stocking density of 0.5 fish/L. Six isonitrogenous (350 g crude protein/kg) and isocaloric (4272 kcal gross energy/kg) diets containing 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 g/kg of oregano oil were evaluated. At the end of 90 d there was a quadratic effect of oregano oil levels for weight gain, specific growth rate… Show more

“…Zheng et al (2009) found no significant differences in proximate body composition of channel catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ) fed diets supplemented with diets containing essential oil of O. heracleoticum . On the other hand, Ferreira et al (2014) found the highest value for carcass crude protein content in yellowtail tetra ( Astyanax altiparanae ) fed a diet containing 2.5 g/kg diet of oregano essential oil. It is known that fluctuations in protein and lipid contents in animal body are linked with changes in their synthesis, deposition rate in muscle and/or different growth rate (Abdel‐Tawwab et al, 2006).…”

“…Conversely, carvacrol, a phenolic compound from oregano EO, was classified as a growth promoter, improving the productive performance of Astyanax altiparanae (Ferreira et al, 2014). Citrus EO, which with its supplementation improved the specific growth rate and feed conversion of O. mossambicus, demonstrates growth-promoting activity (Acar et al, 2014).…”
