Essential Oregano Oil as a Growth Promoter for the Yellowtail Tetra, <i>Astyanax altiparanae</i>

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the effects of the substitution of soybean oil by palm oil in the diet of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) post-larvae, to observe the performance and attractiveness of the feed, and to evaluate the fatty acid methyl esters profile of palm oil. Four hundred Nile tilapias were used after hatching (seven days old), distributed in 20 fiberglass tanks of 20 L each. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of different levels of inclusion of palm oil, which were: 0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 %. The concentration of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids in palm oil was measured, resulting in high amounts of palmitic, oleic and linoleic fatty acids. Significant differences were observed for the variables final weight, total length, weight gain, specific growth rate and condition factor. No significant differences were observed for palatability of the diets. It is concluded that the inclusion of 3% or more palm oil in substitution of soybean oil during the masculinization stage of tilapia larvae contributes to the improvement of productive parameters.

In the present study, Indian shrimp, Penaeus indicus, were fed on diets supplemented with basil (Ocimum basilicum) oil (BO) to observe the growth performance, antioxidant and innate immune responses, and the resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection. The animals (5.0–5.5 g) were fed on diets supplemented with 0.0 (control), 1.0, 2.5 and 5 g BO/kg diet over 90 days. After the feeding trial, animals were intramuscularly injected by V. parahaemolyticus and observed for 96 h for mortality or any abnormal signs. Growth‐stimulating effects of dietary BO supplementation on final weight, weight gain percentage, specific growth rate and feed intake were observed. No significant differences were found in feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, protein productive value and animal survival. Feeding the animals on BO‐enriched diets did not significantly affect the chemical proximate composition of animals’ muscles. Increased values of total protein, albumin and globulin were observed in BO‐fed animals; meanwhile, aspartate and alanine aminotransferases as well as creatinine and urea levels significantly decreased in animals fed 2.5–5.0 g BO/kg diet. Activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, lysozyme and phenol oxide activity significantly (p < .05) increased in the BO‐fed fish, with highest values in treatments of 2.5–5.0 g/kg diet. The dietary BO supplementation significantly (p < .05) decreased levels of malondialdehyde and nitrous oxide. After the bacterial challenge, 66.7 percent of animals in the control group were dead. The BO‐fed animals were more resistant against bacterial challenge especially at levels of 2.5–5.0 g/kg diet, which showed high relative percentage of survival (80.0–86.7 percent). In conclusion, dietary BO supplementation with levels of 2.5–5.0 g/kg diet proved beneficial effects to Indian shrimp where growth performance, antioxidant systems and innate immunity were stimulated. It also promoted the challenge of Indian shrimp against V. parahaemolyticus infection.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of increasing levels of a commercial mix of essential oils (EOs) from cashew (Anacardium occidentale) and castor bean (Ricinus communis) as an additive in diets for Nile tilapia. Thus, 240 juveniles with an initial weight of 35.06 ± 1.02 g were distributed in a completely randomized design (four treatments and six replicates) in 24 cylindrical‐tapered tanks; the fish were fed for 60 days, four times a day, diets containing increasing levels of EO (0.10, 0.15 and 0.20%) and a control diet (without the additive). After the experimental period, the animals were desensitized, and an aliquot of blood was collected for the biochemical analysis; they were subsequently euthanized for the evaluation of productive performance and fillet chemical composition. No significant differences (p > .05) were observed in the analyses of productive performance, fillet chemical composition, and triglycerides, VLDL, total proteins, urea and glucose. However, significant differences (p < .05) were observed in the analyses of total cholesterol, HDL and LDL. Inclusion above 0.15 of the additive showed an improvement in the levels of lipoprotein carriers, increasing HDL levels and decreasing LDL values, without interfering with the fish productive performance.
