The propolis produced by stingless bees of the tribe Meliponini is a viscous product that contains the resin collected from buds, leaves and plant exudates, mixed with salivary secretions, wax and soil. The species Scaptotrigona aff. postica (Latreille, 1807), (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponinae) popularly known as “tubi” in Maranhão State, Brazil, does not mix soil to produce its propolis. The propolis from S. postica harvested in Barra do Corda, Maranhão State, is popularly used in the treatment of wounds and respiratory illnesses. The hydroalcoholic extract of this propolis, rich in flavone-6,8-di-C-glycosides (vicenin-2 and schaftoside), pyrrolizidine alkaloids derived from retronecine, catechin and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives exhibited antiviral activity against the herpes simplex and rubella viruses. The aim of this study was to increase knowledge about the chemical composition of the S. postica propolis by analyzing non-polar extracts obtained using hexane and chloroform as the solvents, by GC-EI-MS. A total of 15 constituents were identified comparing their respective mass spectral data with those available in the NIST data bases and those reported in the literature. The main constituents detected were the phenolic lipids, known as cardanols, 3-(4,7-heptadecadienyl) phenol (5), 3-(10-heptadecenyl) phenol (7), 3-heptadecylphenol (9) and 3-pentadecyl phenol or hydrocardanol (13), which predominated in the hexane extract, while the predominant constituents in the chloroform extract were 3-pentadecyl phenol or hydrocardanol (13) and 3-(8-pentadecenyl) phenol (12). The antioxidant, antitumoral, antifeedant, cytotoxic, anticarcinogenic, antiproliferative, antimicrobial, antileishmanial and larvicidal activities of the cardanols have been demonstrated in many studies.

Brazil presents favorable conditions for beekeeping, having a suitable climate; native flowering plants with great potential for the production of honey, pollen, propolis, and royal jelly; and bees adapted to our conditions, tolerant to the main apicultural diseases and highly productive. Through the meliponiculture, the conservation of mainly native forest areas is allowed; therefore, they are the best environments for the creation of native bees and production of by-products of the beehive with quality. The stingless bees are very sensitive to any disturbance due to anthropogenic action. A systematic bibliographical review was carried out in different electronic databases, through descriptors referring to beekeeping in Brazil. The identification of articles and their inclusion occurred between January 2018 and April 2018. The bibliographic research was conducted in the following electronic databases: (1) Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), (2) Public Library of Science (PLOS) Biology, and (3) ScienceDirect. In order to help in the process of standardization of bee products and traceability of the production chain, it was possible to draw a profile of the main bioactive substances of the beehive products of Brazil. It was also possible to relate the benefits of an adequate management of beekeeping and meliponiculture in Brazil.

resumo -A meliponicultura é uma atividade alternativa para agricultores que podem se beneficiar dos seus produtos para a comercialização. Objetivou-se identificar a preferência da orientação na nidificação da Scaptotrigona postica em colmeias octogonais. Foram estudadas 16 colônias de abelhas nativas da espécie S. postica em colmeias octogonais, modelo ISA 2014. As colmeias foram testadas com as colônias durante três dias seguidos, com observações realizadas a cada 3 horas. Cada colmeia octogonal foi colocada em suporte de madeira à 1,30 m de altura com oito orifícios de escolha para nidificação, sendo estes para os pontos cardeais (N, S, L, O) e para os colaterais (NE, SE, SO, NO). Observou-se que 85% das abelhas de S. postica na Zona da Mata Pernambucana (MPZ) têm preferência de nidificação para Oeste e Noroeste (NO), com maior prevalência de NO (89%) e menor para SE (18%). The aim of this study was to identify the direction preference in the nesting of Scaptotrigona postica in octagonal hives. Sixteen colonies of native bees (S. postica) in octagonal hives, model ISA 2014, were studied. The hives were tested with the colonies during three consecutive days, with observations made every 3 hours. Each octagonal hive was placed on a wooden support at 1.30 m height with eight holes for nesting relating to cardinal (N, S, E, W) and collateral (NE, SE, NW, SW) points. It was observed that 85% of the S. postica bees, in the "Zona da Mata Pernambucana" (ZMP), prefer to nest on the West (W) and Northwest (NO) sides of the hive, with a higher prevalence on the NO (89%) and a lower one on the SE (18%) sides.
