Qualitative indicators of the edaphic environment and ecosystem services in different land occupation systems ABSTRACT: The concept of sustainability has led agricultural research to a growing search for alternative and sustainable models for agriculture, with the forms of land use and management being the determining starting point for understanding the dynamics of the edaphic environment and environmental services of agroecosystems. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the quality of the edaphic environment and ecosystem services in different land occupation systems, through qualitative environmental indicators. Sustainable indicators of participatory diagnosis were selected to assess four land occupation systems: pasture, agricultural mandala, agroforestry system and native forest. The data set of the soil indicators was analyzed using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The agroforestry system has similarities in the quality of the edaphic environment and ecosystem services when compared to the native forest area. It is recommended that soil conservation management practices be adopted in systems with greater anthropic intervention, such as pasture and agricultural mandala. Keywords: environmental indicators; soil quality; management; agroecosystems.
Conclui-se que as abelhas de S. postica da ZMP têm preferência de nidificação para a parte ocidental da colmeia, especialmente para as direções NO e O. palavras-chave: OrientaçãO magnética; melipOníneOs; enxameaçãO.Influence of cardInal and collateral poInts on the nestIng of natIve bees In octagonal bee hIves abstract -Meliponiculture is an alternative activity for farmers who can benefit from its products for marketing. The aim of this study was to identify the direction preference in the nesting of Scaptotrigona postica in octagonal hives. Sixteen colonies of native bees (S. postica) in octagonal hives, model ISA 2014, were studied. The hives were tested with the colonies during three consecutive days, with observations made every 3 hours. Each octagonal hive was placed on a wooden support at 1.30 m height with eight holes for nesting relating to cardinal (N, S, E, W) and collateral (NE, SE, NW, SW) points. It was observed that 85% of the S. postica bees, in the "Zona da Mata Pernambucana" (ZMP), prefer to nest on the West (W) and Northwest (NO) sides of the hive, with a higher prevalence on the NO (89%) and a lower one on the SE (18%) sides. It is concluded that the S. postica bees in the ZMP have a nesting preference for the Western side of the hive, especially for the NO and W points. Keywords: magnetic OrientatiOn; melipOnini; swarming. In Brazil, soil use and occupation is largely responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, and one of the ways to monitor disturbances to ecosystems is through edaphic breathing, result of root breathing and the activity of microorganisms present in the soil. Given the above, the objective was to evaluate the microbial activity of the soil through edaphic respiration in four soil use systems. The research was carried out in four soil use systems: forest remnant area (F); agroforestry system (AFS); mandala (M) and pasture (P), belonging to the Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), Campus III, located in the municipality of Bananeiras - PB. Three samples composed of soil were collected at a depth of 0-20 cm, in each system of use, for chemical and physical analysis in order to characterize the study areas. To quantify carbon dioxide, the methodology described by Grisi was used and the CO2 captures occurred at night and during the day, for 8 months. A completely randomized design was used in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme. The lower temperatures during the night favored a higher CO2 emission; the pasture system and the AFS showed higher CO2 release in the two evaluation shifts, the forest remnant area showed less release of carbon dioxide. The microbial activity of the soil is more efficient at night; and the pasture area has higher CO2 emissions due to the lack of vegetation cover.
Native bees, besides excellent producers of honey, lend a great legacy to humanity through their ability to pollinate plants and the consequent preservation of ecosystems. In this interspecific relation, bees are benefited by plant species by the provision of food (nectar and pollen), besides using their branches and trunks for lodging. However, the anthropogenic action has jeopardized the survival of stingless bees, causing irreversible environmental damage in the preservation of natural resources. This study aimed to identify the nesting habits of native bees under natural conditions. Random trails in the Curimataú micro-region of Paraíba allowed identifying nesting sites of indigenous species in their natural habitat. Sixty honeycomb nests were identified in 12 different plant species, being Commiphora leptophloeos the most preferred host (46.66%), with 55% of the entrance holes pointed to magnetic orientations between the Northeast and Northwest; a greater choice by host trees (85%); preference for nesting in host plants with a circumference of 0.98 m in diameter, entrance hole of nests of 7.77 mm in diameter, and height from the ground of 1.52 m. The obtained data showed little variety of stingless bee species in the Curimataú region of Paraíba, especially Melipona subnitida. The species Melipona asilvae, Melipona scutellaris, Partamona seridoenses, and Plebeia sp. should receive special attention not to become extinct in this region.
