Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae Producing CTX-M Cephalosporinase from Swine Finishing Barns and Their Association with Antimicrobial Use

Abstract: fWe report the recovery of Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae containing the extended-spectrum ␤-lactamase gene bla CTX-M from 24 of 1,495 (1.6%) swine fecal samples in 8 of 50 (16%) finishing barns located in 5 U.S. states. We did not detect an association between antimicrobial use and recovery of bla CTX-M .

“…Disturbingly Huang and co-workers isolated a number of pig strains of E coli carrying qnrS1 (fluoroquinolone resistance) and bla CTX-M-14 on a multi-drug resistant plasmid [48]. CTX-M producing Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated from USA pig faeces [58] and transfer of E. coli plasmids encoding bla CTX-M-1 between pigs and piggery workers has been documented in Denmark [59]. Of particular concern is the detection of carbapenemases in bacteria from pigs and piggery environments as carbapenems are not used in pigs.…”

“…The AmpC bla CMY‐2 and the ESBL bla CTX‐M each confer resistance to ESCs including ceftiofur (Ewers et al., ) and are frequently carried on mobile plasmids which can be readily transmitted between bacterial species (Winokur et al., ). The common use of ceftiofur in livestock populations has been associated with the widespread dissemination of these ESC resistance genes in the faecal flora of livestock (Heider et al., ; Wittum et al., ; Mollenkopf et al., ) and in fresh retail meat products (Mollenkopf et al., , ).…”

“…Since then, CTX-M-type ESBLs have been found in E. coli collected from healthy dairy calves in the western U.S. (Davis et al, 2011) and from 5 of 20 dairy farms in Ohio (Mollenkopf et al, 2012); in clinical Salmonella enterica isolates from swine in Minnesota and from turkeys in 4 states (Wittum et al, 2012); in E. coli from swine finishing barns in Michigan and Ohio and in Klebsiella pneumoniae from swine in Illinois (Mollenkopf et al, 2013). …”
