Ergonomic design of beverage can lift tabs based on numerical evaluations of fingertip discomfort

Abstract: This paper introduced the finite element analyses to evaluate numerically and objectively the feelings in the fingertip when opening aluminum beverage cans in order to design the shape of the tab. At first, experiments of indenting vertically the fingertip pulp by a probe and tabs of the aluminum beverage can ends have been done to observe force responses and feelings in the fingertip. It is found that a typical force-displacement curve may be simplified as a combination of three curves with different gradient… Show more

“…[25] Others FE model have also been developed in order to study the interaction of the hand, more specially the fingertip, with objects. [26][27][28][29][30][31] Finally, many FE models have been developed in different context and for different type of loading. Many have been developed in the context of loading transmission into the wrist, or in order to investigate the behavior of a bone after its fracture fixation, or also to investigate vibration's transmission.…”

“…The determination of the JSI is based on the estimate of six strain variables and on the multipliers determined by those. The strain variable, intensity of exertion (IE) refers to the maximum effort that can be exerted by a human being [10]. Hand-dependent maximum gripping forces by [7] can help to determine the effort.…”

“…In addition to the above-mentioned basic features, universal designs based on ergonomics have been required while developing beverage containers and are expected to enhance consumers' convenience. For example, Han et al have investigated that the relationship between tab ring shape and the feelings in the fingertip when opening aluminum beverage cans; and they have concluded that the tab with a larger contact area with finger is better 1 . Openability of the bottle caps, which is one of a demand of aluminum beverage bottles for consumers' satisfaction, has been studied by some researchers [2][3][4][5][6][7] .…”
