“…Diagnostic imaging techniques, especially ultrasonography and computed tomography, can be very useful tools to diagnose the visceral form of the disease [39][40][41]. Furthermore, in order to eradicate the disease, ELISA test can be performed, although with a sensitivity of 87% and a specificity of 98% [42], prolonging the testing period, and extending time to eradication can occur, having consequences for the economic value of the flock [43].…”

“…In some countries (UK for example), the vaccine is not available, and control is based on identification and sacrifice of positive animals (Windsor, 2011). Voigt, Baird, Munro, Murray and Brülisauer (2012) succeeded in eradicating CLA from a sheep flock on a Scottish farm through a "test and disposal" program with additional hygiene criteria; lasting approximately 22 months, the individuals were tested three times at monthly intervals with ELISA, with western blot to eliminate false positives. The study confirmed the efficacy of ELISA as a diagnostic tool, as it identifies clinical and subclinical cases.…”

“…CLA stimulates both the humoral and cellular immunities and therefore immunoglobulin G or interferon gamma (IFN‐γ) can be measured as indicators of each, respectively. Serology against exotoxin PLD (Elitest CLA; Hyphen Biomed) is the most commonly used test because of its cost efficacy and acceptable test performance (sensitivity 87 per cent, specificity 98 per cent) (Voigt and others 2012). The low sensitivity is likely to be a reflection of the intracellular nature of the bacteria.…”

“…‘Test and cull’ has been used for control in commercial suckler sheep flocks using individual antibody ELISA (Baird and Malone 2010, Voigt and others 2012) and coupled with bulk milk tank serology in goat herds in Norway (Nagel‐Alne and others 2015). This requires repeated serological testing of the adult flock with subsequent removal of any positive animals.…”
